YOUR perfect hunting rifle

I just bought my first hunting rifle yesterday. It is a Tikka 30-'06 SS bolt with a Leupold VX-R 3-9x40 scope. It has some sort of black synthetic stock for "all weather".

I am thinking however of returning the scope and getting a less magnified one like a 1.25-4x (as in Maine there is not too many long shots)

I found and bought a Tikka T3 Lite in 308 for a friend, and that is a really nice gun for the money.

The Leupold VX-R is an excellent scope choice, but in my opinion, the 3-9 is a better power range choice than the 1.25-4 for an "only" hunting rifle.

Blonde or Redhead, I like em all. My best all around is Remington 700 SS BDL, Leopold scope and rings 7MM mag. Does it all everytime. Stand hunting, 7400 BDL 30-06. Walking around, AR15 or 30-30 Winchester lever. It's hard to chose.

That's a sharp looking setup, retrieverman!

Thanks. It has taken me 10 years, but I finally found another stock like the one on my 9.3x74 and am awaiting its arrival later this week. I am seriously considering having MGM build me another barrel in 6.5x55 and putting together a second gun, but the problem is that I like the 9.3 so well and am so confident with it that I probably wouldn't shoot the 6.5 enough to justify the cost.

Wow, that is awesome!

I'd like the same, but with a short, fast-twist .44 Mag barrel that can stabilize 300+ gr. bullets at just barely subsonic velocities, with a suppressor can to match. That would be a lot of fun and would plow through any game animal I really need to shoot around here.

Depends on my mood/phase of the moon, but it's one of three:

Mauser sporter in 7x57, iron sights. Need to win VZ24 receiver first.
Ruger #1 RSI in 7x57, iron sights.
Winchester 94 in good old fashioned .30-30, with a peep sight.

These days, it's mainly the Winchester that goes out the door with me rather than either of my bolts, so that's probably the real choice, isn't it?

I agree with the 1.25x4 scope for woods work. Last year I had trouble in brush with a 3x9 so I put a 1.25x4 on my woods gun. It should be good as far as I'd shoot deer anyway.

Ruger No. 1 in .308, beautiful rifle, accurate with an all around caliber. Leupold VXIII 4.5x 16x 40 on it. one shot, one kill. I am an old soldier.

My dream rifle is a Ruger # 1.
But my woods rifle is a 1970's Remington Mohawk 600 16" BBL in .243 WIN with an old Redfield Wideview scope. It's an awesome setup and weighs in at ~6.5 pounds. Shoots like a laser but is not a bench gun. The only thing I would change about it is make it .308 WIN.

:) For here in Texas, my old fashioned Winchester Model 70 "Super Grade" (.270 Winchester) with a good old fashioned Leupold 3x9 scope. has served very well.

Hunted with my "new" late 1940's Winchester M1894 30-30 with a peep sight for the first time over the weekend and could immediately see why it's such a classic. I spotted a coyote about 150 yards out and loved jacking rounds through and flinging lead at him as he ran off. It's light, reliable, and perfectly balanced. I'll call if perfect for hogs and varmints at short-ish range, though for longer shots and deer I'll stick with my M70 in 30-06.

A Mauser 98 with an aftermarket barrel, still in 8mm. My 98 with the original military barrel is still hitting 1 MOA with PRVI soft points. Some people like .30-06 when they rebarrel, but 8mm is honestly the better round. It hits a lot harder.

I have a friend who is a huge fan of 8x57, and I shoot 9.3x62 and 9.3x74. From our observations, calibers above .308 diameter just seem to kill more efficiantly and do much less colateral damage to the meat.

I am currently putting on paper my perfect rifle. It will weigh 6 1/2 pounds and carry a 26 inch barrel. Wood stock, probably straight grained walnut if I can find the correct chunk. Open sights, either tang or action mounted aperture rear and hooded front. I am happy with any cartridge that lauches a 300 grain 40+ caliber bullet at around 2000 fps so I have a few choices. Most likely this will be a single shot but that is not a problem. I am considering Ballard or Winchester for the receiver but have not ruled out others. No, it probably will not be your perfect choice or anyone elses but it will fit with my style of hunting and shooting.

I have something similar in percussion on the bench currently.

I want an all weather rifle in 257 Roberts. I wish Ruger would make one, with a chamber that is properly sized. Somewhere around a 20" barrel with a fixed 3x scope. Don't need a larger caliber or higher magnification where I hunt in PA.

My Rem 700 Mnt rifle in 7mm Mauser with a 4X Leuy M8 scope is pretty close to perfect.

I am thinking about building a rifle around a modern M-70 controlled round action in 9.3 x 62 or 35 Whelen, with rear receiver bridge cut for stripper clips, a 21" med weight barrel, lightweight carbine style stock, forward barrel band sling swivel, WGRS rear peep sight, ramped hooded front sight, one piece steel floorplate, with everything Parkerized and painted.

I will also need a Poncho Villa style leather chest bandoleer to carry the stripper clips in, however.

Well, I inherited a pre-64 win model 70 in .270 with a weaver k4. Love this rifle and I'll never need another. I will use this one til I pass it on to my kids. I love this rifle and chills run down my spine every time I pick it up.

But if I had to pick another, it'd be a pre-64 in .375H&H with a k4. Twins in all but caliber.

Hey this thread is all about what YOUR rifle would be, so don't sweat it. ;)

I had also considered a Shiloh-Sharps in .45-70, so I get the draw of a single shot. :)

I usually like old calibers and classic guns. I think if I were building the perfect hunting rifle for me, considering I live and hunt in Idaho and the game would be deer, elk, moose, bear, sheep, goats and antelope I'd probably find an old Mod 70 in 7mm Rem Mag and stick a vintage Lyman Alaskan 4X on it.
Pretty boring, I know, but I think it would do the job better than I could.

I always wanted a .257 Roberts built on a ULA M-20 action with a 20" Douglas barrel and a CF stock. I wanted something that would come out at 5lbs or less loaded, with sling and peep sights.

As for building the "perfect Rifle", I have had some experience. I have built several of them. Each works for me for a while and then I decide I "need" some modifications! I started with bolt actions, then did a lever rifle, and went to single shots. When/if I build this lightweight, it will be the 8th perfect rifle I have done. Each one was enjoyable and each next one is necessary!

Id go 7mm Rem Mag or 7ackley mag in a Sako action. 26 inch 1/10 twist. Maybe a birds eye maple stock. Leupold 6x24 scope.

Thanks guys, now Im going to be getting all these "mystery boxes" from the UPS and the wifes gonna kill me.
