Spending the money on a Glock would be rather like putting the notes in a crosscut paper shredder.

I would have to say a CZ P01 with a Fist IWB leather holster custom made for my CZ along with someTrijicon night sights...still having plenty of money left over to take my wife out on a nice date to cool her off for buying the gun. :p worked for me.

Well, since I was in the same boat as you a year ago, I'll tell you what I did:

I bought the Springfield XDm 9mm (approx $550), added a Streamlight TLR-2 Laser/light combo (approx $250), a Winchester EV gunsafe for the nightstand (approx $100), 50rds of HD ammo and 200 rds of practice ammo (approx $100) and an "Intro to Handguns" course at the local range for my wife and I ($80).

The XDm is a great first gun - easy to use but with several passive safety features. High capacity (19+1) with an accessory rail and interchangeable backstrap panels for "custom" fit. The "m" line of XD pistols also has a match grade barrel (for what it's worth), improved grip surface and undercut trigger guard and many other improvements to the XD platform. The only upgrade I plan to make is to tritium night sights.

The Streamlight TLR-2 is a great laser/light combo with easy-to-use controls. While I practice a good amount, the backup of being able to use a laser in a high stress situation is comforting.

A safe and training are also a must in conjunction with your first handgun. Don't get so caught up in the gear that you lose sight of your skills and safety. I'm not suggesting that you have, just reiterating the point!

Lastly, while I highly recommend the XDm, most any modern combat pistol in 9mm will serve you well, given the price range you are working with.

Where in the world are people finding NEW Browning Hi-Power MK III's for $600?

They're going for $975 new around here and magazines are crazy expensive.

No, I'm not talking about FN Hi-Powers either.

Either A S&W Performance Center 9mm or a Walther P88.

Skip the P88 unless you have mid-size to larger hands.

There's absolutely nothing a $500 Glock can't do that a $1K handgun can! Save your money and purchase a glock and spend the other $500 on ammo!

Best of luck with your desicion!
