What was your experience like on any WMA you have hunted on? Did it have a good bit of fields or any clearings?
(Wildlife Management Area)

Mostly thick woods. There are a few areas that would provide long shots; breaks for power lines and clear cuts, mostly. Some food plots, too. The deer mostly aren't there during the day as they know that's pretty much suicide by hunter.

The WMA in Alabama offer every type of terrain you could want. The biggest problem is that the primary color on WMAs is blaze orange.

Sam Houston National Forest , SE TExas is so thick . I wish they made several more access roads to get into . But other than that is a really nice place to hunt with little cost to one poor boy like me.

There is a new area opened up last year near Topeka. It runs off of 2nd and Urish along the Kansas river bottoms. 80 acres of dense hardwoods and river access. Also has 25 acres of corn and 25 acres of sunflowers to boot. THe area was considered a wildlife refuge for many years. It was recently purchased by wildlife and parks. Permit only access on WMA. There is a kiosk along Urish around 5th street. Only so many permits put out per day. Self pay station and answer a few questions on the permit and drop it off in the box. Shotgun and archery only hunting for turkey and deer. We absolutly slaughtered doves down there this year. I shot my limit of 15 within 40 minutes:eek:. We did spot a few nice looking does and two bucks in the area while scouting.
I would not post this accept for I own land and do not usually hunt public. So have at it boys and girls nice area.

Just depends on the WMA

I'm 5 minutes from one that's bottoms wetland is as flat and open as can be. Yet 20 minutes north the Ozark WMA is the complete opposite

:D

Black Warrior, though, isn't packed full of hunters. Well, the food plots are, but if you stay off the food plots, and get a quarter mile off the roads, you're pretty much assured to be the only one around. Black Warrior isn't an easy hunt, for sure.

Not for me

I once hunted the Crab Orchard NWR in Souther Illinois. Picked it up at noon after seeing ten hunters and 1 8pt buck. He stared at me from 20 ft but I only had a doe tag! he was frantic from the pressure and the sounds of slob hunters unloading automatics at running deer. I left and never went back. I never realized how offputting it would be to see "orange critters" walking in my shooting lanes!:what:

I wouldn't rifle or muzzload hunt public land, I've down bow before, but never really scouted enough (hunted bow only WMA's as well)

Lexington is the only real WMA around me (Oklahoma City Area) and I just don't want to see it during rifle season, unless its a weekday during the morning.

I have only hunted on a WMA one time and that was enough. After having other hunters walking around me all morning and one even putting up a stand in sight of me and then walking under me asking if I had seen anything I threw in the towel on managed hunts. Too many good leases available.
