I was talking through some stuff with my wife this morning and talking about buying my oldest 2 girls new deer capable rifles. I was looking at AR carbines, but got to thinking about maybe a youth inline rifle. I know it’s not traditional but it’s also not controversial and not a scary rifle. It allows them to hunt all gun seasons with a capable and compact rifle. It also gets them more in the mind of 1 shot, make it count.

As for inlines, I’m an old school Knight guy so the Littlehorn looks really good to me right now.

edit: Littlehorn is discontinued and it seems knight has nothing more than a brand name in common with the old guns I had and loved.

I got the nod from my wife and placed an order for a 50 cal traditions 209 primed youth sized inline. It was the closest thing I could find in stock and reasonably affordable from a reputable retailer. I have bought from Buds Gun Shop before and they had some decent bullets on clearance so 40 bullets and a youth rifle shipped straight to me was $260. Can’t argue much with that. I already have plenty powder for my cap lock guns… and truthfully I kinda wanted a lighter weight rifle to use for stalking anyways. Hope my youngsters are happy with it because they will be sharing it.

30 grains of 777 under a .490 round ball makes a wonderful rabbit and squirrel load. The ball will not expand and is quite lethal out to 30 yards with little perceived recoil. It's a great way to pass the shooting between two little ones. The nice point about squirrel hunting is that the critters aren't alarmed about the report as they are with a .22 or a HMR. In many cases they take it as thunder, etc. and go about their business. If I were you, I would also look around at gun clubs and shows because there are many traditional muzzle loaders available on the cheap, especially full length .45 cal. cap locks that will nicely fit young-uns, like a .45 CVA for example.

You mean something like this?
A short, .32cal inline muzzleloader?
I have 2 of the Marathon First shot rifles, great little front stuffers.

I picked up a Traditions Buckstalker Youth model for my daughter because she needs a short LOP on everything.
She hasn't had a chance to take it hunting yet but it seemed to handle well for her at the range.

I was really looking at one of the CVA Wolf models for her but the one that was listed as a shorter LOP was never available nor was just the stock because I considered getting the standard rifle and the shorter stock, but neither the rifle nor standalone stock ever said anything other than out of stock.

As soon as I saw the Traditions as available I ordered it.
