Thanks for all the feedback folks! I think I am going to get the Savage Rascal. I think that anything else - which were all great suggestions - are a little too big for my daughter still.
I would consider the Henry .22 lever action youth model. It will shoot any rimfire round, has to be cocked for safety sakes, does not need magazines and is fun to shoot.
The Henry youth lever action is 4.5 lbs and has a length of pull almost two full inches longer than the Rascal/Cub and rifles of that size. Doesn't sound like what he's looking for, at least not yet.
