Hello all, I got a call from my local pawn shop about a "mauser" that had come avaliable for sale this morning.

I didn't have time to research it and find out the current market values and all that. He said the price of it meant it would move quick. So I hauled ass and dropped the cash on it after inspection.

How did I do? Any yugo mauser experts or aficionados in the house? I paid 350 plus tax for this one. Came with what looks like a m48 sling, sight hood and cleaning rod. All matching numbers (bolt, stock, receiver and floor plate).

Those are my favorite of the Mausers. They have all my favorite features: bottom sling, straight bolt, full handguard, flat buttplate, manageable length. Price was good, and the sight hood and sling are bonuses that you don't get every time.

8x57 is still around as surplus, but it's not a difficult cartridge to handload either. Keep any commercial brass you fire, and then buy your choice of .323 bullets. You can reduce recoil with lighter bullets and reduced chargers of H4895 powder -- not that 8x57 is a plinking cartridge, but you can make it tame enough to enjoy with the steel buttplate at least!

I bought one just like this one back in 2003. I think I paid $99 at a LGS. They are "intermediate" length actions so a standard Mauser 98 stock will not fit if you decide to change it out later. You're also going to be limited to 8x57/7x57 length cartridges if you end up doing something else with it. I sporterized mine and sent it to ER Shaw and had them re-barrel, re-chamber to 250-3000 Savage, turn the bolt, and drill and tap the receiver for scope mounts. The actions on these are very smooth. I put them up there with the Venezuelans, which is another one of my favorite Mauser iterations.

Good score!

Looks great! I'm a casual enthusiast, rather than an aficionado, but I like mine. I shoot cast 170 grain flat nose in mine, it fills the pot, squirrels to deer.

Thanks guys I really like the fit and finish on this one. Everything feels very solid and sturdy. I do actually enjoy the straight bolt handle as a nice change from my k98. The receiver also has a beautiful (to me) plum tone like you see one some other mauser parts.

Can't wait to get it out and blast some 7.92 surplus I bought last fall!

It looks nice. I have an M48A and it’s a good shooter. Grafs usually has PPU brass (keeps it Yugoslavian) in 8mm.
Bases on the Cyrillic script, yours was made in factory 44 (zavod 44), for whatever that’s worth.

That's a good price for a nice one like that.
The one I bought years ago, middle pic, was completely slathered in cosmoline.
The wood is still saturated to this day and sweats the grease out when shooting.
