M-48 stock

P C Craig--The Yugo Mauser's action is shorter than a K98k Mauser, so many of the plethora of retro goodies for the K98 won't fit the Yugo, including stocks. So there just aren't as many to choose from if you're sporterizing an M-48.

Sorry to say I don't know of a composite stock available. However, if you're open to other suggestions, Boyd's Gunstocks makes a beautiful laminated stock for the Yugo M-48.

They are used to dealing with newbies, will help you over the 'phone to get exactly what you want, have quite a number of stock styles and 2 standard colors, "nutmeg" and "pepper," (Grayish and brownish, respectively) as well as a rainbow of custom colors if you want to go that route. They will send you a catalogue for the asking, and they have a rather complete website.

You want to get an "unfinished" stock--means not varnished; all the inletting is done. But as a DIY item, you can make any small modifications that occur to you, and glass-bed your action into the stock, before sanding and varnishing it. Boyd's has directions on the sanding and varnishing, and they sell the materials, too, but I did mine with locally purchased sandpaper and ordinary satin spray-can varnish, and it turned out (if I may say so) a good bit better than stone ugly. As with any woodworking project, the sanding is the most tedious part. I probably spent 2 weeks on mine, total, for glass-bedding, sanding, and varnishing, at 1/2 to 1 hour per day.

Now, if you have them make up a stock for you there will be a wait, but if you want a standard item and you can find a dealer that has it, you can order it quicker from a 3rd party dealer.

Anyhow, if a laminate stock is not out of the question you could do far worse than giving Boyd's a call.

I have heard that stocks made for small ring mausers (Swedes and the like) can be made to work with the Yugo M48s with a little extra inletting. Supposedly the screw spacing is identical and you just need to open up some space for the front receiver ring.

Take a look at this and read the customer reviews.
