Yugo Re-arsenalled Model 98 Mauser

A Dunham's Sporting Goods just opened in my town. I went in tonight to see what they had. Their case of mil-surp guns contained half a dozen or so Mosin-Nagant 91/30s (mostly with laminated stocks), a few Yugo SKS's, a couple of Enfield No. 4's, a couple of Yugo 24/48 Mausers and a Yugo rearsenalled German K-98. It was this last rifle that interested me. The finish was mostly gone, but the numbers matched and the grain of the stock was interesting. I didn't have my bore light with me, so I didn't check the bore, so I don't know what it looked like. Assuming that it is decent - no real pitting and good rifling - how much is a rifle like this worth? Their price was $200, which I thought high (all their prices were a bit high for that matter).

$200 is fairly high.

I bought mine about 3 months ago from Classic Arms for $130. Its a K98 that has had the markings scrubbed and restamped with the Yugo crest. Actually, they didnt get all the markings scrubbed....it still has one eagle stamped on it.

Lets do the math though.....

$130 for rifle
$15 shipping
$20 FFL fee (I have a C&R but Im assuming you dont)

The Classic Arms rifle would have cost you $165....so thats the approx value of my rifle to you. So they are about $35 higher assuming we are talking about a rifle in about the same condition as mine.

The bore on mine is mint, the bluing is about 85% to 90% with the stock in fairly decent shape except the upper handguard is different wood then the rest of the stock. It came with the cleaning rod......but I added the sling.

Thanks for the math lesson. I noticed from some of Dunham's other C&R guns (I have a C&R license) that their prices were a little high, though I would not be paying shipping and I'd have the chance to inspect before I bought (not a bad thing and worth a little extra to me).

I checked Classic Arms (and Samco and a few others places) before I posted and noted that they were (all) sold out of the Yugo refurbished Model 98s. Yes, they were all around $130-140, before they were sold out. I just didn't happen to pick one of these rifles up while they were as plentiful on the internet.

Normally their prices are "average" at best, however they have "sales" all the time, and I've picked up some really nice rifles at good prices (a VZ-24, an unissued M44, and an unissued Yugo SKS.)

Also, ask to see what's "out in back"---often the stuff in the rack is rough, but they'll have better examples stashed away. I got my unissued SKS this way. The one on display was really beat up (sale price $129) but they offered to show me others, and I ended up with a flawless gun for $129. Same withh the M-44 (which I subsequently sold for twice what I paid for it.
