I'm currently looking at military surplus rifles and ammunition, and I'm wondering if anybody here reloads using the brass from this widely-available Yugoslavian surplus ammunition? Is it a good idea? Bad idea? Thoughts?

I got a case from Centerfire Systems 6 years ago.

Some of it does not go off on the first strike.

I don't use it any more.

I used to use it to get a rifle on the paper, but I have sworn off corrosive surplus ammo.

Not 100% sure about the Yugo stuff...But MOST of the 8mm surplus is both steel case (although may be copper washed) and Berdan Primed. People HAVE reloaded both but its a major PITA. Even if copper cases, berdan primers are expensive, and you need special tools to remove.

Yugo 8mm has rather hard primers. Weak firing pin spring or crud/cosmoline inside the channel may cause misfires.

Romanian surplus 8-mm

A side note:
Most Romanian 8-mm brass is berdan primed...but not all. I got a batch of inexpensive surplus ammo headstamped "21 RPR" and discovered it to be boxer primed, and nicely reloadable.:D

However, this ammo is corrosive, so after firing wash them in water to remove the corrosive salts.
