Hey i was wondering if i should buy a yugolavian sks. Are they any good? They seem to be a lot cheaper than AK47's. Also what kind of accessories are available for them and are they common to find at gun shows?

Thanks a lot

For the money, the sks is one of the best buys you can make. Cheap ammo, reliable as all get out, fun to shoot. Careful though, they can be addictive. :D

Yes they are a fun rifle to own. Ammo runs about $40 per 500 rounds or so. You can get a folding stock, scope, and just about any other gadget to put on it. Mags can be either the internal 10 round box or up to 75 round bananna magazines.

They are well worth the $120 for the rifle.

I've got two, and I think they're the best deal in milsurps out there right now, IMHO. Sturdy, more accurate than an AK, and fun to shoot. There's a fair amount of accessories out there for them (try Tapco, CDNN, etc.), but not as much as there is for an AK or obviously an AR. I've seen them at my local gunshow all the time, though that's not where the best deals are. I bought one of mine here: http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/Rifles.html

It came to my local FFL in 4 days, and was in unissued/perfect shape. I'd highly recommend it. If you want to learn more about SKS's, you really ought to check out this board: http://www.sksboards.com/forum/index.php There's a wealth of info over there about SKS's and to a lesser extent AK's.

Be careful with the accessories too and know what you are doing. It is really easy to break the law in modifying C&R imported rifles. Kind of like running a stop sign when nobody is around, only the penalty is pretty hefty!

Thanks you guys have helped a lot, i think im going to start seaching for one

I think the best accessories for them are stripper clips and lots of ammo!

The Tech-Sights that go on the rear of the receiver seem interesting though and have had positive reports from people who have them so far. I'm thinking about getting the sights myself.

Spend the $35 and get yourself a C&R license. That way you can order the SKS and have it sent to your door. Also, you'll save money at midwayUSA and Brownells for parts.

"what thoughts do y'all have on the SKS, (With bayonet) as an HD weapon?"

Adequate, but not my first choice.

Pardon if this is in the wrong forum, but what thoughts do y'all have on the SKS, (With bayonet) as an HD weapon?

As compared to what? It has pluses and minuses like any other choice. You'll get a lot of overpenetration so unless you live in a brick home any missed shots can enter a nearby home. It's longer than a pistol so can be more difficult to manuver in closed spaces. Some people will talk down about the 10 round mags. On the plus side it's cheap so if you need an inexpensive reliable weapon it's a good choice.

I think for the money most people would recommend a good pump shotgun over the SKS but I think your covered either way.

As a HD weapon, it's a little long, particuarly if you get the cheap ones with the grenade launcher, the 59/66. The round is OK, but not great.

My 1st choice for HD would be a compact shotgun with slugs. I went with a Mossberg 500A Persuader because it was about the same price, or even cheaper, than a replacement barrel for my Rem 11-87.

If you have a Dunhams Sporting Goods store in your area they have them right now for $99. Hard to beat that, especially if they have a few to choose from.

Here is a link to an article about keeping your SKS on the right side of the law.

I bought my first one this weekend, haven't had a chance to shoot it yet but looking forward to trying it out.

Here in Cali, the Yugos don't have all the grenade stuff on them, but they do have the bayonet.

They also go for $250, unfortunately. I am getting mine for $180, and it is in superb condition. A little cheaper than my 870, and a higher capacity as well.

The Yugo will be competing with a custom series 70 1911, a SIG P232, and an 28" barrel 870 for HD duty. Right now the .45 and .380 have top spot because one handed weapons don't preclude the use of a flashlight. The .380 gets the nod for now, because the .45 is an heirloom, and the .380 is stock, so if, god forbid something should happen and my weapon gets confiscated, I won't be missing an heirloom, (unless they take everything.) Eventually the 870 will be the go to weapon, but it just isn't practical right now, (Too big, no light, two handed, 4 rounds max.)

I see the bayonet as an advantage, but the Simonov needs a weapon light to be totally useful for HD. I don't see the 10 rounds as a disadvantage, (Specially not in Cali,) as the .45 is 10+1, the .380 is 7+1 and for now the 12ga is 4+1, so the Simonov is up there at the top.

Purdy rifle, there.
I wonder what the best SKS are...this thread (I had been thinking about them for a while, but the $120 made me think more) has got me thinking about them.

I paid $161 delivered for my wifes' Yugo SKS unissued, and it is great! Tok a while to decosmo it, but worth every effort! Accurate and reliable, and she loves it. It was her 7th anniversary present - 7th IS steel, right? :p

I just received my Yugo 59/66 SKS from AIM, I ordered the one listed in excellent condition, it shows only a few marks from storage, got it cleaned up and it appears to be unfired. I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, ammo should be delivered in a couple of days.

I had mailed my C&R to AIM, I called them on a Monday to order, and had the rifle in my hands on Friday, extremely good service from AIM.

It's okay, but I'd much much rather have a short barreled pump action shotgun. The SKS, especially the Yugo, is a little long to use as a close quarter weapon IMHO, and I'd be worried about overpenetration. Sure, I'd use it if it is all I had, but this is not the role it's best suited for.

get one, for the money, they are pretty good guns. beware...youll soon find yourself collecting these things.

I started with a russian sks back when they were not popular and very cheap then picked up my yugo this past year. It is the unissued cherrys import coated in what seemed like 50 layers of cosmoline. I asked the dealer when he handed me the box if it came with a free rag or a pair of gloves.

I ve shot my yugo and am pleased with it

I finaly got the fixed chinese 20 round mag in the mail today. Installed it on my Yugo and will hopefully test it tomorrow. Cycling it by hand it seems to work just fine except for the bolt hold open, that's kind of hit and miss. However I have a solution for that problem once I verify that the mag works. Loading the first 10 rounds is no problem, but it gets harder to get the last 5 rounds into the mag. I'll have more to say once I actualy get to shoot it. Wish me luck. :) Oh yea, ask me about my rubber band recoil buffer. Who needs a $10 piece of plastic when a $.10 rubber band does the same thing. :neener:

Gotcha beat! Sorry, but i have to say this one - I ordered the Yugo from J&G Sales on a Thursday morning, and it was delivered Friday afternoon! Seriously! of course, being less than 150 miles from the store probably helped.... :p :neener:
Great rifle - gonna go blasting Friday!
