These scopes were made over 20 years ago. Were they known as quality scopes back then? Would they still survive and be serviceable now? What say you? Thanks...

Do you mean Diavari-C? I think Diatal refers to a line of binoculars and spotting scopes.

If so I bought a used rifle several years ago that had one on it. I moved the scope to another rifle and used it for a time.

In my opinion the glass and optics are as good or better than anything else made today in the $500 range. It was very comparable to the Zeiss Conquest, maybe a little better. It was a good size, almost exactly the same as a Leupold VX3 in 2.5-8X36. But with some negatives. For a compact scope it was quite heavy and the eye relief was much less than the newer Conquest, far less than a comparable Leupold.

There is no doubt it was/is a very high quality scope. But I'm thinking they were made closer to 30-35 years ago in the 1980's instead of 20 years ago. They have a following and I saw some listed for as much as $700.

My biggest concern with older optics is the rubber seals. No matter how good the quality of an optic the rubber will degrade over time and is more prone to fail. I felt I might be pushing the limits on a 30+ year old scope. Leupold is good about repairing older scopes if returned, but I don't know how Zeiss will deal with this. I liked the scope, but honestly I preferred the newer Conquest. I ran an ad in another gun forum at $500 and sold mine quickly. I hope the guy who bought it gets years of service out of it. But for me I'd rather have the money and a newer scope.
