Looking for some advice on what range to zero.
This rifle and cartridge combo is good for about 500 yards max effective range. It is a Rem 700 Tactical in 6.8 SPC wearing a Super Sniper 10x scope. I am thinking that I should zero at 300 yards.
you need to get out and shoot it at all the ranges you anticipate shooting out to. then, determine the ballistics, and then decide how much hold-under you can live w/ at closer ranges, and how much hold-over you can handle at further ranges.
on my precision rifles, i twist turrets - so i am zeroed at every range +/- 25 yards (my turrets are marked in 50 yard increments).
on big game hunting rifles, they are all zeroed for 250 yards.
If for shooting at known ranges, you should shoot it at all ranges of interest and have sight settings charted; probably taped to the stock.
If for shooting at unknown ranges, you must learn to estimate range with the mil-dots and either learn what mil holdover for what range or plan to make rapid appropriate sight adjustment off your chart. If the former, you have to figure out what to do at intermediate ranges that don't fall under a dot.
I would set my basic zero at the closest range I expected to shoot so all corrections would be up. Trying to figure out whether to hold/adjust under or over would add a step to the process and would confuse me into misses.
addition: most any chambering will shoot reasonably flat to 200 yards, such that a 200 yard zero will permit 1st shot hits on targets as small as prairie dogs or gophers from the muzzle out to 225 yards or so.
i am not familiar w/ the 6.8 spc, but my understanding (perception) is the ballistics aren't exactly flat - thus i'd go w/ a 200 yard zero, and then twist turrets.
buy the little tape-measure thing leupold has out that mounts to your scope and write in your comeups. or write them on a card as jim suggested and tape them to your stock.
