After watching the first "season" of the Walking Dead, it got me to thinking how an average American family might be armed if their small gun collection was forced to serve zombie duty. Let say there is a hypothetical 5 individual family, A Father, A Mother, A Daughter, A Son and a Daughter. Let's say they have:

4 pistols
(2 revolvers in .38 calibers, 1 9mm auto, 1 .45 auto)
4 rifles
(2 .22 lr semi-automatics, 1 bolt action hunting rifle and 1 semi auto rifle in .30 caliber like a semi auto ak.)
and
1 shotgun (12 gauge)

Lets say that
Individual A is skilled with weapons and is strong
Individual B is very accurate, strong, but prefers lighter recoils
Individual C has very limited firearms experience and is the weakest individual
Individual D is stronger than C but weaker than E, but has decent weapon proficiency
Individual E is stronger than D but unlike the weaker C, has NO weapons experience

so now, who gets what, what person get the shotgun and who gets jipped a handgun?

I've put some thought into this sort of scenario and I have an idea of what I might do, but would love to hear what y'all thought

Also, to help you guys out, lets say that A is sort of in charge of things

Personally I would invest in more hardware so that each has any "tool" that they are comfortable and proficient with, along with stocking up on the necessary ammo for those tools.

Further more making sure that enough of the family unit has applicable survival skills (software) is really just as important as their "tactical" (hardware) contribution in a survival situation.

I would suggest another "hypothetical" family of 5 that would be more successful, IMHO they would fare pretty well.

Individual A middle aged male, is skilled with weapons and is strong has a variety of handguns, rifles, and shotguns that he is proficient of better with. Plenty of ammo to go around. He has a variety of "marketable skills" from farming (lay vet work also), to light mechanic work, to building, pouring concrete, running electrical lines, and plumbing, running heavy equipment etc.

Individual B a middle aged female only has 2 weapons she is comfortable with, both are rimfire, she is proficient with both and has enough ammo to be involved in an extended engagement. Limited experience in farming, but an excellent cook and many house making skills.

Individual C a 20is male, tremendous physical condition, a hunter and shooter with his own weapons. Multiple handguns rim fire and center fire, multiple rifles in both rime fire and center fire caliber, Has a fairly extensive amount of ammo to use. He is fairly experienced in farming, excellent fisherman, and some trapping experience. He is the best bow shot in the group, and can make fish, crawfish, traps, frog gig, spear fish, etc. Going into a medical field and has had several good 1st aide classes and experience.

Individual D is a 20is female, a wide range of skills for one her age. Proficient with rim fire rifles and pistols that she owns, and a fairly good shotgunner, spent more time on farm and knows more than either of her brothers. Going into a medical field, and has some good 1st aide classes and experience.

Individual E a 17 yr old male, proficient with each of his rim fire, and center fire rifles, and pistols, and probably the best shotgunner in the group. Has a fairly extensive ammo cache. A great athlete, a little less skilled in productive farming/daily living skills than the others, but is very bright and hard working. Typically the most creative individual in the group.

Sorry, but the absence of zombie (SHTF, TEOTWAWKI, Fantasy) threads here is because we don't do zombie (...) threads here.
