Nice!
you do not need a ball starter for minnies, minnies need to be .001 -.002 under bore dia. you need a nipple wrench, spare nipple. 58 cal brush,Jag, bottom scraperand ball puller. I prefer one pcs cleaning rods for my musket. Lube I use 50/50 beeswax, olive oil.

Loading or Bench Rod

These are real handy and will make shooting a lot easier, cleaning too, you will need a .58 Cal Jag of course. If you can find it get a hickory rod, no matter what you use DO NOT get a fiberglass rod. FG rods are harder than the rifle barrel and will actually polish the rifling, did this to my Zouave in in 1974 had to have the barrel cut and re crowned. Have fun and be safe.

I should have done before and after pictures, I was polishing the barrel bands and showed them to my wife one polished the other bad, she thought I was showing her a nice polished piece of brass and a piece of wood, could not believe they were the same part.
I have the jag & bullet puller they were part of the kit and screw onto the ram rod.
I almost bought a fiberglass ramrod thanks for the tip.
I'll keep checking here before I place an order for the extra's.

You may want to get some patched roundballs to shoot as well and a mold once you have the precise diameter selected. It's easier to churn out roundballs from a home operation than the more complex hollow-bottom Minies. Also they use less lead. I believe a lot of folks with these CW era .58's practice with roundballs.

There are all kinds of lubes. I like bore butter.

What Sharps said. Ball puller, slightly undersized minie ball mould (keep it affordable), jag (to clean with), a brush, musket caps and powder, and nipple wrench.

Do get a bottom scraper, I shot a Zouave for 3 years and thought I was doing all right and then it started keyholing on me. I couldn't get the breechplug out and wound up cutting it off. I found the chamber end of the barrel corroded beyond recognition because I couldn't get the fouling out of it. Wrecked a great rifle.

I buy 3/8" by 36" hardwood dowells for ramrods. I make a brass threaded end for them and epoxy the end on the dowell. The tools thread into the brass end, and the wood doesn't hurt the crown. I never use the ramrod that came with the rifle.

I wouldn't use a

Fibreglass rod , not even to whip my dog . It attracts grit and it stays inbedded into the glass way more than wood will ever do . Especaily never use one without a muzzle guide . That tis the single quickest way to smooth out your Lands around the Crown you know :banghead: ...
If your gonna make your own rod as sudgested , make sure you pin your attatchments holder tips , not just epoxy them , certain DOOM if you don't pin them too . :banghead:
I would also recomend whenever at the range use a muzzle guide , and geta good Range Rod , likea Klean Bore Brand brassy with guide that slides up and down the rod , I got one its awsome :D.. I know you may only get one shot out hunting a year on a deer , but working up loads in that rifle , its no problem puttin half a hundred through it in a day , save your rifle and crown as long as you can .

Good luck , Jaeger

I made a functional muzzle guard by flaring the end of a piece of 3/8" copper tubing about 2" long and slipped it over the ramrod that came with the rifle. I leave it on the ramrod all the time.

That's a good idea

Hellgate :)...... I am guessin one of those little powder funnels in copper or brass would work too ... Great minds think , never said they think alike though :D I think a good nipple pick set would be another good accessory to have on hand too for him , snail cleaner ( pipe cleaners ) , and nipple wrench too :) ...
6 pack of Coca-Cola on ice not a bad idea either :D Oh and a nice pipe full of great Toe-Bacco :D

How 'bout a snifter of Mount Gay Barbados rum ta go with the Coke? (AFTER the shootin's done, of course)

You have the basics, now you need to go to: www.n-ssa.net. They can teach you how to make her work wonders. While there, hook up with a team and shoot with and against some of the best musket shooters around!

Oh yea a patch worm. at some point you will leave a patch on the bottom. also be carefull about the brush you use, Shotgun brushs have a tendence also to pull off once in awhile in the bore. If you have the breech plug out put some never seize or chock tube grease on it before installing. I also finaly picked up CO2 a ball discharger, which will also be handy if you can not get the patch out w/ the worm.

I bought a 3/8 dia synthetic ram rod from Track of the Wolf and was surprised it came without a handle, my mistake I think I was looking for a cleaning ram rod.
Seem's to be good quality and it isn't "fiberglass" so I'll use it, may try attaching a handle later on, got a bunch of 510 gr mini balls so off to the range next week.
