22 long rifle has gotten hard to get here, or at least it's hard to stock up any kind of volume on.....

17 HMRs though are on the shelf and comparatively reasonably priced. Since I've wanted another one for a while and I already had a few hundred rounds on hand I figured I might as well take advantage of a deal my FFL buddy had and pick up a Ruger precision rimfire.

They've been out for a while so there's not a whole lot to talk about.
I stuck a cheap eBay break I had on it to make the barrel look longer, swapped out the pistol grip for one with a little less rake off of my AR, and stuck the random Weaver Kaspa Tactical scope on it in Monstrum AR mounts.

I also broke all the sharp edges on the action and bolt, and did a trigger job.
The bolt runs smooooth...ish now. Youll never mistake it for a nice feeling action but its got no wierd glitches. Ill do more polishing when i feel like it.
The triggers got the slightest amount of creep, but is polished smooth and breaks at 1.75lbs.

Over all I like the way the rifle feels and for less than 400 bucks im impressed....even the plastic stock adjust well and locks up tight, with surprisingly little flex.

I did also notice something interesting. The stock is inletted to take the magazine retention block (no idea if thats the actual name) in two positions, allowing a standard 10/22 mag to fit and hold perfectly.
Im guessing the gun could pretty easily be converted to .22lr or .17M2 with a barrel and mag swap. It's something I might try since shaw barrels are pretty cheap.....or maybe ill get lucky and get ahold of a take of .22lr barrel.

Anyway here she is....gonna go shoot her and get better pictures this weekend hopefully.

Gun before the pistol grip change.

Any 17hmr ammo on the shelf there? I finally bought one because it was the only ammo consistently available in the last 2 ammogeddons and I had been seeing it all of the last year, and now that I dropped $1200 on rifle and optics it all disappeared.

piles.....well small piles....

I was just looking and there's 17hm2 for 9 bucks a box, 17hrm from 12-30 bucks a box, .22mag for 14-20, and Aquila Colibri for 8 bucks a box, no other .22lrs

Congrats on the new Ruger. I have a little story about 17HMR ammo. During the past shortage. It was always in stock at walmart. One guy at the store said. ''I hope it's not going to be the new 22''. Because of the price. I made the jump into the 17HMR right when the covid started. I love the round. And it's no more than 22 mag ammo. It's the best grouping rim fire ammo i ever saw. Here is some grouping of 3 different brands of 17hmr.

Ive had 3 HMRs, and i agree it generally out shoots the .22mag and usually the .22lr at 50yds, and pretty much always outshoots them at 100. My buddys B-mag will hang also.

Especially in the wind. I was just resighting one of my 22lr’s today after replacing the scope. It’s pretty crazy how much windage you have to hold even at 100 compared to a 17. I’ve been thinking of picking up a b-mag too. I think that would be fun at like 300-400 yards.

That looks like a great rifle! I have wanted one in .17 for quite some time. I think it would make a great walking jack rabbit/prairie dog/marmot rifle.

I am looking forward to a full, "Loonwulf" style write up!

Enjoy yet another new rifle!!!!!

This maybe the last one for a while....well at least of my own guns. I pretty well exhausted the "credit" I have with my FFL buddy from the Carbon 6.5 I built that he wanted.
The .17s are fairly popular as low noise short range pig poppers, I know a couple guys that use them with the factory V-max bullets, and a sold hit is a lights out event. Ive got a couple boxes of the FMJs that I plan on testing to see how the penetration is, and if they work fine that might be what I use for that work also.

My first 17 hmr was a ruger 10/17 mag, got it around my 12th birthday. That ended up well lol.
The savage 93 were nice when they were cheap but became close to 17 hornet rifles in price, I did want the laminate ss 93 target that I never got. The marlin were great for The money, dad had a few ruger 77/17 and they were nice.

I did a 17m2 conversion on my 10/22 and it blew up regularly.....fun when it wasnt tho.
Ive never seen a magnum 10/ out here yet, the A17s are pretty popular tho.
As are both the marlins and the savages, and RARs
I have the only 457 I've seen so far.

Got to the range today, shot about 60-70rnds, with most of it being cheap 20gr CCI fmjs.
My dad actually shot the majority of the rounds at berm trash, and according to him didnt miss once. I unfortunately had to tinker with other stuff so only fired two magazines worth 5 to site, then later a 10rnd group with the fmjs, and a 10rnd group with CCI leadfree hollow points.

The ones way out of thr groups id be willing to take the blame for, the fmjs were shot prone with my holding the back of the stock and no bag.
With the lead free i was having a hard time seeing thru the scope and know i broke a number of shots a little poorly.

The penetration on those will surprise you.
I settled on the 17 grain A-17 Ammo. It was a little hotter and more consistent.
