Scope Suggestions for .22LR

I use Simmons 22 Mag 3-9x32 scopes on my .22's. Can pick them up around $40-50 from any of the big dealers. Work great out to about 100 yards with no problem.

What kind of budget are you looking at? Any particular features?

That rifle will shoot. Feed it good ammo and it will do better than a whole lot of centerfire guns.
I have been oh-so-very pleased with my mueller apv. 4-14x40 AO $130 bucks. Glass rivals my burris ff2 and leupold vx1's. Better than my sightron s1. Adjustments are a little mushy, but it works well. I got it based off a plethora of recommendations off rimfirecentral.

I've got a Simmons 2-10 power on my Ruger 77 22 lr. and like it a lot. Pd about $100.00 for it a long time ago.

I have a Nikon P-22 (now called P-Rimfire) on mine.

They have a couple of models - I have the BDC 150 on my FV-SR as I'm a big fan of scopes with bullet drop reticles...now if they would just offer them in a FFP reticle! :banghead: (although I see a number of makers are finally starting to come around).

Some folks don't like the BDC reticle as it has oval shaped openings instead of hash marks, but I kinda like it. If you're looking for ultimate accuracy, maybe not, but for plinking, hunting, etc., it's kinda nice to have a clear picture of the target in the BDC ovals.

It currently shows on sale at Nikon's site ($129.95 / $50 off) but is backordered. If you're interested, you may be able to find it out there for the same price? In the past, I've found a lot of times Nikon put something on sale at their site vendors offered the same deal.

I also have the same scope, but this time with their Nikoplex reticle with extra turret. It appears this particular model has been "archived" - a euphemism for discontinued? (although some vendors may have some).

My buddy who also has an FV-SR set up like mine (with a Boyd's stock) is using a Mueller. Can't tell you what model, etc., but it's the one everybody with FV-SR's / Boyd's stocks seemed to be using.

I didn't want to put quite that much money into it and didn't want as long a scope as his Mueller - I figure you can't go but so wrong with Nikon stuff (based on past experience)?

They also advertise the Nikoplex model for the same price, but says estimated to ship in 1 to 3 days - I'd be leery of that. They may be planning on drop shipping directly from Nikon, but if Nikon doesn't have them on their site?????

That's always an option. The Simmons would be more than adequate for your Savage.

Weaver makes a 2x7 (or thereabouts) that's Japanese and just fantastic for the $150 or so it costs.

I've never had a problem with the Simmons scopes going back decades all the way to the 3 I have now. 1 being about 25 yrs old that has survived 3 moves of which 2 were out of state moves. The other 2 Simmons are the ones listed in post 2.

Thats not to say they're the best.

I also had the Weaver mentioned above but in 4x.

It's nicer than the Simmons but I didn't feel handicapped with the Simmons. In fact, I sold off the Weaver because I tend to like variables more and I had an extra Simmons laying around.


I write this from the perspective of..... unless I was hunting 200 yards or competing, I don't see then need for anything more than $150 max particularly on a 22lr that I'm shooting cans, paper, rabbits, desert bugs and ant hills with.

The other scopes I've used are long out of production.

I just went through this, and I got a Nikon Rimfire EFR and a Burris Timberline. I decided that I really wanted an adjustable focus optic, since I use the rimfires at highly variable distances.

I've been quite happy with both.

+1 on this recommendation. I own three Mueller APV's and one APT. All are excellent scopes for the money. The folks at Rimfirecentral love the APV.

Got a 3-9x50 8 Point Simmons on mine. The objective is about a mm from the barrel. Love the way it looks. I only shoot 50 yards, so plenty good for my use. Really bright scope for $50.

Check out Primary Arms web site they make a rimfire scope with a ranging reticle calibrated for cans, bottles, squirrels and crows I think. Plus it has windage for 5 mph marked. Good reviews. I think I will buy one the next .22 scope I get.

I have a Weaver 3-9x32 ao scope that I like for hunting and plinking . I like it better than my Leupold 2-7x28 rimfire scope . The Leupold is still nice though .

I am cheap and lazy (fair warning). I put a Simmons 22 Mag 4X scope that I paid like $25 for from Cabelas on sale on top of a 10/22 that is stock except for a Kidd trigger. Out to 50 yards it is great. Best of all, I don't have the temptation of fiddling with the magnification long enough to let the critter I am targeting figure out I am there and escape. If I am shooting longer than 50 yards I likely have a much more accurate Marlin 39A with a 3x9 no name Japanese scope on it.

The cheapest scope that held zero on my .22, I owned a lot of scopes, was a Sightron S2 4-16. The only reason I sold it was because it did not have enough adjustment per rotation on the vertical adjustment. Now I have a Bushnell 6500 4.5-30 scope on. Its overkill, but it is such a good scope and it maintains a perfect zero and the tracking is 100% spot on. There is nothing I hate more than a scope that goes out of zero, as it just make it easier to wound animals.
If you do not want to spend to much, but still have a reliable scope, I would say look at the Sightron Sii or better scopes.

Hunter, you recommended a really nice scope, but it costs $350, well outside the stated budget.

I have the sightron s1 4-12x, and it's a nice enough scope for the money and possibly within budget, but nowhere near the same class as the sii's.

I still recommend he gets a Sightron. It is not nice to buy a cheap scope that will just loose zero all the time. Its a big confidence breaker

I can guarantee you that the rifle will never shoot better than the optic that's on it....

Try the Natchez site. Plenty for you to look at . Make up your own mind.....

People have said the Simmons .22 Mag 3-9x32 scope has held up even to a .30-06. Take that as you will, it's evidence enough that it'll easily take a .22. I've overall had good luck with Simmons scopes. I've had one break, but that scope was from the mid-90's and was probably 15 years old at the time, so I'd say it served its purpose. I replaced it with another Simmons.

A Leupold 2x7 rimfire is a nice scope.

Yes, except it's 2-4x the cost and less magnification compared to other scopes that will perform just as well on a .22LR. Leupold on a rimfire is a horrible waste of money.
