Mossberg enters the handgun market

Very interesting.... Thanks for the enlightenment and the link. If I were in the market I'd consider one after they've been out for awhile and I got some more "real world" owner feedback. My initial impressions are favorable.

Crossbolt safety on a pistol???

Your observation piqued my interest-seems a tad unusual to me too. However, quick google search revealed this isn’t an unheard-of configuration. HK and even Glock have executed these. Odd, maybe, but i bet it works okay with practice. Would have to be careful about engaging it, or just go without. It has a 6# trigger pull, after all...

Are they actually making it, or are they having it made for them?

They say it’s made in Eagle Pass TX. Mossberg has a facility there that makes shotguns, so I have no reason to assume they don’t make them themselves.

The Mossberg story is very similar to the story of Savage. Back in the 40s and 50s they made excellent products, particularly their rimfire rifles. Then they started down hill. The last 15 years or so it seems like they’ve turned things around. I’m sure their little polymer pistol is well made. Hope the market accepts it.

1911 ergonomics with a 2 finger grip and cross-bolt safety? I know marketing departments take a lot of liberties, but that’s just excessive.

If it weren’t for the unique safety it’d be a yawn. instead it’s worth a chuckle, which is nice I suppose.

I wish them the best of luck. It's a good looking pistol with some interesting features, but at the end of the day, the most important thing is size vs capacity vs price.

It's competing directly with the G43, the Shield, the XDS, the P365, the G43X, The Walther CCP, PPS, Ruger LC9s, Kahr CW9, Beretta Nano, etc, etc...

I also find the crossbolt safety a little odd, and I fear that Mossberg may be a day late, but . . . . . I do think this has potential to be a winner for them.

My LGS/Range sent me an email about this yesterday. It is interesting, especially in an already full market of carry pistols. I applaud them for taking a chance, and am happy with another American made option. I won't be the first to buy one, but I might shoot one should my range get one on the rental counter (free rentals). Who knows.....

Seems like you'd want to push the safety with your right thumb (if you're right handed) to disengage it. Maybe the ergos aren't what I imagine, and your index finger can easily reach it.

Interesting design. I see a lot of pros with it. Couple of things I'm a bit meh about, but if it shoots well, I can see it in the running for a spot in my subcompact rotation.

I'm not a big Glock fan, so the 43 isn't high on my list. I've looked at but never felt compelled to go with a Shield, and I would probably go with a .45 at that. I would probably have a PPS M2 if I hadn't bought an EC9S, but that's become more of a back up truck gun so I may be looking for a durable single stack 9 to replace it.

I believe the pistol is in the "fire" mode in the picture. Meaning to disengage the safety, you would push with your trigger finger to the left.
Which might mean issues for those of us who are LH and accidentally pushing the safety on when trying to fire, especially under some form of duress.

I think the safety button may be reversable. There is the un-saftied version for those who don’t want it.

Not loving the cross bolt safety. Do live they are wading into the market. Mostly cause I’m a mossberg fanboy. But with an msrp of 400+ it’s easier to buy a shield. Although I saw the older version had some weird issues with a dead trigger. The shield at 250 is a hard option to avoid. I still wish there was more 10 round options around.

I've never really considered Mossberg for anything other than their old .22's and their shotguns, until I took a chance on their Mossberg MVP 24" 5.56 bolt gun. And to my surprise mine is quite accurate out of the box, the bolt can be a little hitchy through cycling a round but works as advertised from STANAG mags.

This Mossberg pistol doesn't do much for my personal needs/wants but I'm glad it seems it does for several on here which is a good thing.

I'm glad that Mossberg is stepping up to the plate especially since Remington/Marlin/Bushmaster/DPMS under Cerberus. I hate to see a capital management company own so many once heralded firearm companies. So if another American made firearm manufacturer can make a go at a broader range of products I'm glad for it. It's really disconcerting with what is happening to these old firearm companies these days, chasing profits, getting over extended, and then we have a lull in buying from the public (much of all of this due to political pressures which change with the wind) causing financial woes. Just look at what Savage Arms is facing currently with Vista Outdoors. Hopefully, gun manufacturers start realizing they need to stay owned and managed by gun people and not capital/hedge fund type managers.

Yes, and I'd rather push the safety off with my thumb. But it would depend on where my fingers fall on this, so I'll reserve comment till I handle one.

I asked them about the safety this morning. They confirmed it is reversible, so you could configure the gun to your suggestion.

So, a left-handed shooter could reverse the safety as well as the mag release button (they confirm this in the OP’s link), or just the safety, I guess.

PASS! You have to remove the firing pin to take the slide off! A cross-bolt safety, LOL. Made on the same assembly line as their $200 Maverick shotguns. PASS!
