My first two 22-250s were Remington 788s. Still got them too.

The M-1A uses a spring-loaded ball detent to secure the windage knob (similar to the AR-15/M-16 A2 windage knob). This is a design difference between the M-1A and the M-1 Garand and M-14. IMO, the ball detent windage knob works smoother than the belleville spring setup of the M-1 and M-14.

Need more info. Does it have a one piece walnut stock and walnut handguard? Or does it have a two piece stock with a dovetail glued joint just in front of the receiver? What is the condition of the metal? Shiny blue? Dull Blue? Blue with gray spots? Rusty? What is the condition of the bore...

Hold her interest by making shooting fun. A 10/22 with a red dot sight will do that. Once she's hooked, you can expand her horizons into other types of firearms and shooting.

Pull out the bolt and make sure it wasn't ground down to fit the locking shoulder. A ground bolt tells you it wasn't put together correctly by a knowledgeable assembler.

I believe the plastic stocks are injection molded nylon with chopped fiberglass filler. You can test a dab of mineral spirits inside the barrel channel to see if the nylon softens.
