Better Quality .22 caliber

My wife has never been much of a shooting enthusiast, but lately she seems to be more interested. Doesn't want anything too powerful, so I thought a .22caliber rifle might be a good choice for an almost first time shooter.

What are your suggestions (make & model) for a better quality .22 caliber?
 
For a Semi I would suggest a Marlin model 60, best bang for the buck out there $60 - $200. Or the little Browning auto if you want to spend the extra money. Lots of good bolt rifles out there these days, I personally like the Ruger 77/22, have owned 1 and shot a few others, are always nice shooting in my experience, the bolt Marlin guns shoot great, but don't have the same quality triggers, Anshsultz makes GREAT shooters, but I don't personally like their looks for the money they cost. I have shot a lot of others, but I don't lean towards a bolt in the .22lr.

Now both my sons, and my daughter like my little Marlin 39A better than anything else out there so depending on your budget you might go that way $300 - $600. The Win 9422 or Browning BL22 are also very nice .22 lever options in the $250 - $500 range. The little Taurus Pumps seem like great, fun little guns in the $300 range, and I personally love the Remmington pumps especially the older ones and you can still find some good deals on them from time to time.

My suggestion is to take her to a couple of good gun shops and let her get the feel and see if anything just clicks with her. If not then try the Marlin 39A and if she doesn't like it you can send it to me to get it outta your way! :D
 
I picked up a TOZ 78-01 new for $129 I put a decent scope on it adjusted the trigger and began shooting .5" groups at 50yds with CCI blazer. I am vary pleased with this Tula firearm, and my 10/22 is taking a back seat to the TOZ.
 
From my year or so of research on the very same subject,(plus a little experience now) I'll say go with a stainless marlin 60 over a 10/22. Just use the search function,you'll likely find there's no comparison.( the last two weekends, my 60 outshot my buddy's TWO customed,re-barreled 10/22's ).
I also have a new CZ 452, and though it took a little while to find it's favorite ammo, it's all of a sudden turned into a little sweetheart,too.
Still, for the money, I'll take my 60 all day long.
 
MILDOT; thank you for some common sense, a mod 60 will outshoot a tricked out 10.22 all day long. as for nice ones though, neither make the cut. a nice semiauto would be a Thompson / center or cz if you can find it, a nice bolt would also be a cz ot thompson, or kimber, or cooper or anschutz, but these are getting over 500 bucks. you def need to go to a gunshop, and see what she likes. Don't forget to check out the used section; should be filled with marlin mod 60/75/99/795's and such, and I would not hesitate to buy any marlin used; whether they be bolt action or semi auto. just make sure your gunshop uses a smith' so that you know they have been checked out.

The best of both worlds, for nice, not too expensive, and reliable as well as super accurate, is a cz. They will only go up in value, and they are beautiful, and accuracy will rival anschutz, Finnish Lions, Biathlon Basics, and such.
 
wep45, any idea what type of action she might like?

I'm not very "up to speed" on rifles, more of a revolver man. So, I guess, a semi auto, multi shot.
 
wep45 . . . there's nothing wrong with a 10/22 for plinking and they can be readily tricked out with aftermarket stuff if you want. They also come in multi colored laminated stocks. Some of the custom stuff can really look "space age". What I'm trying to say is that they're really cool rifles. It's just personal experience, but 2 girlfriends (not at the same time :)) picked the Ruger 10/22 to shoot over my levers, bolts, and pumps because it looked cool. I own a bunch of better quality rimfires but they really enjoyed the 10/22 and they are fun to shoot.

It's not exactly rifle advice, and I'm 36 and single, but instead of surprising her with a rifle, surprise her by taking her to buy the rifle she wants. You may buy the most accurate, svelt rifle out there, but if momma ain't happy . . . ain't nobody happy.

I highly recommend CZ bolt guns if you think she'll be into accuracy and not just plinking.
 
Marlin 60 on the inexpensive but good side. Marlin 39A on the higher price side. CZ whatever for bolt action. I'd stay away from Ruger unless you want to replace the barrel, trigger group, stock and end up with nothing Ruger to get a accurate rifle and a drawer full of parts.

Better......
A. Under $200
B. Under $300
C. Under $400
D. Under $500
E. Under $600
F. Under $800
G. Under $1,000
H. Under $1,250
I. Under $1,500

We also have to know whether you're willing to buy used, or must it be new? And also, do you have a separate budget for glass, or does this budget include glass?

You are absolutely correct in your choice of caliber for her.
 
If your willing to spend $200 or so you might look at the Winchester Wildcat 22. Its the same as the Toz 78 which is an excellent rifle.

The Winchester comes with 4 mags and is light and just a little shorter in the buttstock than most rifles.

Any Marlin is a good choice and can be found used in most pawnshops for under a hundred bucks.

Ruger 77 is the one for you.
 
A Savage Mark II bolt action is, imo, much better than a Ruger 10/22. Accuracy is already built in so you don't have to spend a lot of bucks making it shoot better. :D I'm shooting 1.16" groups on most days (5-10 left to right cross wind) with mine and I know the rifle is capable of better than that in calm air - out of the box.
 
+1 on the Tula Toz-78. I have one and zeroed it in last Sat for squirrel hunting , and was able to get 5 shot groups of 3" at 75yds. They are the same rifle as the Winchester Wildcat except that Winchester changed the stock and sights and took off the fully adjustable trigger that the Toz comes with.
 
My wife loves the old Marlin Model 60 I picked up recently. We were out at the range over the weekend and I could hardly get a chance with it.

d. under $500 new or used is ok. BUT, if it is used, I need to know what the better quality makes/models are. for example I would not hesitate to purchase a good used S&W model 686-0 thru -5, 357 magnum. the quality was built in and lasts.

what does "glass" mean??

better keep my S&W 686-4, .357 magnum loaded, cocked and ready at all times now.:D
 
By glass, I mean a scope - are you going to shoot it with iron sights, or a scope, most likely? If scope, do you have a separate budget for scope, or does the $500 need to include scope & rings?
