    Are you talking about the oval depression in the top strap just above the forcing cone? If that's it then it's fowling cup and not flame cutting.

    That was a common problem when the M-16 was introduced. The solution was to load 19 rounds in the 20 round magazine. This was before the forward assist was introduced.

    25 and 300 is what I remember for the M-1 also. The AR-15 may be a little different due to the sight height being a little higher over the bore.

    If I remember correctly the .32s are six shot revolvers and the 38s hold five rounds. The OP's gun looks like a five shooter to me..

    The early gas trap M-1s did not have a place for the cleaning kit in the butt and no access door on the butt plate. Does your butt plate have the door?

    forward observer is correct. The military used 70 grains of black powder for rifles and 55 grains was the standard load for carbines. You can shoot the 70 grain loads in your carbine but it will be a little uncomfortable.
