Mossberg Shockwave Pistol - Best Usage ?

I see the Mossberg Shockwave as a short compact shotgun for self defense. Its size makes it useful for close quarters mostly in a home and easier to use for clearing operation where a full riot gun with or without a pistol grip would be more cumbersome. Don't think it would be a good idea to carry for general defense where greater distances could result in undesired collateral injury from stray pellets to civilian non combatants.

I like this You Tube informative review by Thunder Ranch regarding how to safely use the Shockwave along with target patterning and shooting technique.

Breaching doors and making your wrist sore. Those are the only two practical applications I can think of.

Our SRT had a very short barrelled shotgun as a doorway weapon (and it was handy for killing dogs at very close quarters -in the doorway...)... After that it was pretty much useless once they were inside the structure so they quit using it and equipped their point man differently....

As a guy who relied on a standard riot gun as my primary close quarters weapon on the street.... I'd have never touched any PGO or similar shotgun since they're just not worth much - just my opinion... I wonder just how many customers for such a weapon Mossberg thinks there are....

If you look at Smith's video, he subtly points out the deficiencies of the gun. There are many better HD long arm options in shotguns and carbines. It's a fun gun. I compared it to the Pedersoli:

http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2016/11/11/pedersoli-howdah-45410-double-barrel-pistol/

Sure it would work if that's what you had but there are better choices. But a fun gun - I would buy the Howdah but not as that price.

I support buying "just because guns" as I watch my old man friends buy Harley motorcycles. Just because. One needs to buy silly things. But drive your Toyota to work and use something sensible for home defense.

I don't know, but anyone that has ever seen a Mad Max movie, Zombie movie, Gangster movie, etc. and thought having a "sawed off" shotgun would be cool but didn't want the expense and hassle of doing the NFA tax for the real deal could be a potential customer. I'd say making it as a pump instead of a side-by-side double made it "more practical". I'm in this camp, I just think it'd be cool to own and shoot occasionally. I'd be even more excited if it was an "impractical" side-by-side double or made as a lever-action as used by Arnold in Terminator 2 :) If the Shockwave and Remington's version sell well, who knows what could follow, perhaps an entire new category like Kel-Tec created with the P3-AT.

As others have said in other threads, anything that might get new shooters interested in shooting should be encouraged whether we like it or not.

Not meaning to hijack the threaded, but would there be any restrictions on transporting a Firearm across state lines, like with a NFA item?

Good question. Even though the Shockwave falls into an "in-between" category of the NFA, different states may have different definitions of what constitutes a legal "pistol," "shotgun," or whatever. It is quite possible that possessing a Shockwave in some states might be a crime. I'd certainly check before crossing any boundary lines.

Bingo.

It's a fun gun, nothing more. You could use it for defense... but it's kind of impractical I think. I've had mine down to the crik several times this week and I'm getting pretty good at hip shooting it. Full loads of buck are pretty intense, and at dusk, kick a mean fireball out the end. Very cool blaster!

Texas just recently changed its law (should take effect Sept 1) to make the Shockwave and its category of "firearm" legal, consensus was that it was illegal under current law. TSRA said only Ohio and Texas had laws making it illegal, so that should leave only Ohio.

Other states like Maryland treat it like a pistol for which getting permits can be difficult. Definitely check the status in your destination state. Unloaded and inaccessible transport in transit should be OK as per the FOPA, but New York, especially New York City, has the philosophy of arrest and let the courts figure it out, too bad they don't feel that way about illegal aliens.

This is a good place to start before any trip transporting firearms:

You forgot "turning money into noise" :)
Around here "promotional" dove loads are cost competitive with fireworks and you can buy them year round instead of just a few weeks before the 4th of July and New Years Day :)

I don't know... the Pedersoli WOULD be interesting, if it didn't have the same firepower as a Bond Arms derringer...

The original Ithaca Auto & Burglars in 20 gauge are one of my dream guns. But chambered in the tiny .410? Sorry, would not scratch the itch.

I've been on the fence about getting one for my truck/cabin. I don't hunt. I'm not looking for a scatter gun that can fill any niche role other than if I am hanging out by the lake off season and hear a bump on the door at 1am.

Having something small that fits in my duffle or would stash in the small area under my back seat is tempting.

If they release it in a marine finish, I'll be all over one.

I'm sure they will release one in marinecoat at some point, these seem to be selling really well.

I got mine mostly for the cool factor:) It looks cool to me. Also, I can't think of any other firearm I can just buy over counter that can hold six rounds of 12 ga buck that's just a little over 26 inches long.

Mossberg Shockwave Pistol - Best Usage ?
It is not a pistol. It fits the definition of a Title I 1968 GCA Other Firearm that is neither a long gun nor a handgun nor a Title II 1934 NFA SBS or AOW. It is sorta like a Pistol Grip Only shotgun but the balance, ergonomics and comfort of the birds head is better than most shotgun pistol grips. As an Other Firearm it is age restricted like a handgun on a 4473 transfer.

Best Usage ?
These Other Firearms from Mossberg and Remington are the tactical equivalent of the Witness Protection Shotgun. What was the original use of the WPS? For defensive use when having a conventional shotgun was not convenient, as when keeping a low profile in public while protecting a witness.

my best usage
To keep as a replica of a WPS? Really, I see it as a curio and replica of a neoclassic firearm. My current defensive needs don't include maintaining a low profile in public with a shotgun. If my circumstances change it might be nice to have as an option.

I deleted anything not related to definition or usage.

The original WPS's were 870's.

Just shot mine this evening with Remington 9 pellet 00 buck when looking down the bead sight. Gun did not hit me in the head as so many internet experts said it would. Surprising accuracy across the creek. Fun!

When my old Best Bud was getting close to check out time with the big C, he ordered a SBS PGO based on a Mossberg with not only a shortened barrel but shortened mag tube (yet took a good bit of work for the manufacturer to rework the barrel) He had had a medical stint installed in his shoulder pocket and could not longer use long guns. He felt that a short 12 gauge might be better for home defense inside the home than his .45 ACPs, .357s or his .44 Charter carry gun for some reason. In typical government fashion, after a long wait, the approved paperwork showed up the same morning about four hours after I helped put him in the hearse.

For folks that can not use a long gun from the shoulder and who live in close confine like a boat or trailer these things make some sense, I guess.

Sorry to hear about your friend.

For some people, I could see the shockwave being very useful for. There's thread's here asking about what pistol is good for jogging- it's all about the role I suppose.

I wonder if you could get away with putting an arm brace on it.
I would not try it. Either way you would have to put a different as yet to be seen grip. The legality of this is there. But anything resembling a stock may out it in the category of an sbr and interpretation would be decided by the whim of the judge if you got in a bind.
