What did you shoot today?

20231014_082609.jpg
A gun I had not shot in a while.
Savage Model 63KM (K key lock with mannlicher stock, M .22 Magnum).

Three odd batches of .22 WMR left over from the Great Ammo drought plus a new box of CCI MaxiMag .40 gr JHP.
The ammos shot minute of clay pigeon at 50 meters but on paper at 50 yds they showed different centers of groups.
CCI MaxiMag 40g JHP
CCI MaxiMag 40gr TMJ
Win Dynapoint 45gr HP
PMC Predator 40 gr SP

I spent a long time at the range this weekend putting 150 rounds of black powder 45 Colt through my Cimarron/Uberti '7th Calvary' 1873 SAA revolver! Shooting at 50 and 100 yards. I'm still not over how much fun black powder cartridges are! It's all the standard fun of shooting, but with the added excitement of a fireworks show!

I did at least scratch the black powder itch enough that I can stop neglecting my smokeless powder guns for a while. I had been doing nothing but black powder shooting this past month.

The grips on my 1911’s are handmade by my brother in law No cnc machine just a table saw, two different sander and a drill press. Attached are some of the others he made me for our swap meet. He can make about 2 sets a day IMG_20230728_201902287.jpeg IMG_20230714_151209576.jpeg

VZ-58: internally quite Different than what most of you might assume (and striker vs. hammer)...No common components with AKMs...-not even magazines---o_O
Made in the Czech Republic. 🇨🇿 by CSA, imported by Czechpoint. This image was " liberated " from Google. My furniture has layers of Fast-Dry Poly by Minwax, to brighten the color. Pimp shine with zero regrets.

Sidenote----:)Sidenote: 🇨🇦Canada has Cancelled its Widely-Planned, Massive rifle Confiscations..................; this from a Canuck directly to me. "The RCMP neither has the staff to begin confiscations,
nor desire to get into shootouts with gun owners".... the guy's exact words. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police must have desperately found excuses to avoid this as soon as Trudeau announced his plans....

Huge numbers of these 58s / "VZ-858s" are still being used all over Canada, along with AR-15 in .223 etc. The guy lives in western Canada in Saskatoon.🥶😶‍🌫️

And Canada is still manufacturing various semi-auto centerfire rifles for domestic consumption.

PTR-91 (.308): US clone of HK-91🇩🇪 (G3). PTR's original tooling was G3 machinery bought from Portugal. They gradually transitioned to CNC production.
My total round count since nib? Approx. 1,100.

One single hiccup/misfeed--because I allowed the mag to lean on the bench during just one shot....... Otherwise a perfect function.

The optic I had on my Keltec S2k crapped out so I took that out yesterday to dial in a new one. Then I shot my new to me Ruger Mark IV lite for another 250 rounds and established after still having to obscure most of the target with the front sight at every distance with elevation maxed that it was time to go home and order a shorter front sight. Low shooting is apparently a common issue with these.

BT99, 1974 vintage, 34" full with one ounce loads of #8 at 1150 fps. Crushes birds from 18 yard line.
An addendum: The club where I'm a 43 year member and director had our annual hog roast tonight. A buddy was collecting the fees and selling raffle tickets for a shotgun to raise money for the high school team we host and my son (who cooked the hog) and I coach. He asked me, with a grin, "Know anybody that likes old 870 stuff?" knowing we are the biggest fans in the club. "Sure, whatcha got?"
He hands me a dirty, greasy old 28" full choke plain 870 barrel with the rolled matting down the top. Probably from the first runs of Wingmasters in the early 50s.
Bore was spotless. He said he found it in an attic of a house he was cleaning out. Said he knew I probably had an old beater in need of a barrel. "It's yours."
I have a fifties WM and if this cleans up I'll put it together with the plain walnut stock and corncob forend sitting in the parts bin.
Then I will shoot it next Friday at the FOFBSWPS&CS meeting.
(Friday Old F@rts BSing, World Problem Solving and Coffee Society). A and we shoot a few rounds of trap too.

First trip to the range with a recently bought pre Model 10 (1950) after putting on the grip adapter and a dab of bright titanium white acrylic paint on the thin front sight blade. The adapter made the magnas work for me and the paint allowed me to see the front sight. The old girl's got some miles on her but shot flawlessly and pretty accurately at 25ft considering it's a 1 7/8" barrel. The gun and I are both 73 yrs old.

What did I shoot today? Nothing - the range was FULL! My son and I drove down and EVERY SINGLE POSITIONS WAS FULL. Something tells me nobody told them there is some bogus "ammo shortage" going on right now.
Well, maybe next week.
But, I did shoot this two days ago...

The winds finally laid down today Givin me a chance to send a few rounds downrange. I just picked up a new to me but very old Springfield model 15 bolt action single shot 22s,l,lr. She's not a modern day scoped nail driver but works great and will definitely put a rabbit or 2 on the diner table. I'll refinish her sometime once I get caught up on projects. 20231023_153052.jpg also ran a few dozen rounds through my ruger wrangler which is always a fun time. 20231023_154411.jpg

.500 S&W BHA carbine at 100 yards with peep site. Funny today at the range I was the only one that was using iron sites. Even the pistols had red dots or lasers all the rifles were scoped. I was the only one out to 100 yards with a rifle one guy was at 75 yards all the rest were between 50 and 75 yards. Is using iron sites a dying art or am I just going jungle Amish. Range .500S&W 100 yds.jpg

Iron sights are dying. It's a shame too.

I regularly shoot old military bolt guns with issue sights. When I talk to others about it they seem amazed that we shoot 'all the way out there ' at 100 yds.
Then I tell about us shooting at 200 regularly, and a few times a year to 300 yds - all with issue iron sights - they look at me as if I was nuts.

It's not all that hard to do, but it does take practice.

Iron sights may seem like they're dying, but using them is still a fundamental skill that new shooters should learn. I take something with iron sights every time I take a new shooter to the range.
