What did you shoot today?

Tested four ammo types in the Proof barrel, getting ready to shoot an NRL-22 match Sunday.

The SK Standard Plus is what I zeroed with, and it shot real well, but I only have 160ish rounds left, enough to shoot the match though.

Turkey shoot (at paper target) season approaches. I shot my Springfield (Savage) 94 with Tenite stock for pattern at 25 yards. 30 inch barrel with old fashion pre-plastic shot cup Full Choke. For years it has stood unused in the gun cabinet.

A gift from my late brother Terry decades ago. And really tight pattern. Feels like it weighs 4 lbs. Kicks like a mule. I got a nice pattern on paper with one shot. Shot at clay pigeon on a berm at 55 yards. My shoulder said enuf.

Growed up at turkey/card shoots but there ain't many around my parts of NC anymore. Still a few spread out. But it used to be a big thing. It's where my love for shotguns especially old single shots began. There's more card/money shoots around now days then there is good old fashioned turkey shoots. But them guys have 5 to 10 thousand dollar custom built rail guns that will drive that #9 shot through the bullseye like a slug. I've built a pretty good shooter out of my old winchester 1300 but it's still technically "stock" and doesn't hold up to them money shoot guys with custom bullseye shotguns.

There's an old roadhouse maybe 3 miles from me, it's been there for more than 100 years. Built back before prohibition days as a dance hall, it was out in the sticks back then. I'm certain they sold hooch 'under the table'.
Even 30 years ago the owners would still hold a card/turkey shoot every month or so, out back of the place. Nothing but trees and lowland marsh for 1/2 mile.
I was never even competitive with my Winchester 1200, them boys had some rigs that were incredible.

It's all built up around there (and here) now, no more turkey shoots.

1. Sighted in my sons .243 for Hornady Superformance 95gr SSTs. I am considering buying some in .257 Roberts and have never used them so I said what the heck. I had some returns at Academy so I exchanged for an overpriced box. Shot four inches right of the Federal Blue box. A quick scope adjustment and ready
2. I freaking HATE AR-15s. I just cannot shoot them. I have this older Rock River Lar-15 made in 2005-2006. Someone told me it is an A2 design. Anyway I shot it today with M855 62gr ammo and it sucked. Bigly. Badly. From 100 yards the group was outside of 10 inches. I have several open sighted guns I shoot inside three inches at 100 yards. I have no idea why I suck at ARs, but I do. I have two and I may trade them for a Mini-14.
3. The EZ 380 i mentioned a few weeks ago that didn't function out of the box new came back to me from S&W. And yes it now shoots. I even carried it today just to break in the holster. Shot 60 flawless rounds today so thats about 150 since I got it back. Looking good.

Someone tell me why I can't shoot an AR please.

M855 sucks for accuracy.

I do t know what is up with your rifle but try some decent ammo before you hang it up.

.223 Handi and Savage 340 in 30-30.

The 30-30 did pretty well. Shooting some 170gr CorLok Remington ammo from around 2000. Did just fine.

I think the .223 started to “walk” grouping a little due to heat. First few rounds were pretty tight, after heat up the group started to get bigger. My son shot it and did pretty good too.

The Barnes TSX shot tighter than the Speer 50gr SPs. Maybe they would both serve to up the powder a bit, but if he can kill a deer(s) tomorrow I’ll be happy.

1873 Uberti Birds Head, 3.5 inch barrel. Not yet impressed with accuracy, but it is VERY fun to shoot.

He and I both spent some time working with this one and then switched to the Smith 64-3 - he loved ringing the steel with the Smith at 50 yards, finally finding the sweet spot with this old warhorse.

My older brother dropped my Crimson Trace 5-25X50 scope on it's head, on concrete, attached to a rifle, a few months back, so I have been playing with it on and off ever since to test it. I recently shot it some more and it passed every test again, but I'm going to shoot in an NRL-22 match this Sunday, so I needed to put the Burris back on that rifle, and naturally I needed to check zero after remounting it. I ended up going .1 Mil left and .1 Mil up at the 50 yard zero in 64 degree weather this morning, I'll recheck that zero this afternoon in those temps which should be in the low 80s. It was about a half to a full bullet hole low this AM, so I expect it to be good then. We'll see. I also got velocity for ten rounds afterwards and updated my Kestrel, so now that gun profile has two temp/velocity inputs, which will let me let it calculate velocity for me as the temps go up all day Sunday. I like to have three temp/velocity inputs, but this gun/ammo combo is new. I really like my Crimson Trace
that I bought on sale 50% off, but I wish it had a zero stop. Not too bad though, because it can't go a full revolution below zero, so I can always find my zero.

Back to the range with the 6.5 Grendels this morning.

The PSA AR functioned flawlessly with new Duramags. I had problems with the ASC mags I tried last time out. The Howa Mini did pretty good with the 105 grain Blitzking loads, but I have some more work to do with them. I have some Barnes 120 gr Match Burners and Hornady 123 gr SSTs to try as well.

Something interesting, I was a bud range who had a brandy new 44 magnum Marlin lever action and a 44 magnum Ruger redhawk revolver with 7.5" barrel. So, I brought my .500 S&W BFR revolver with 7.5" barrel and my BHA .500 carbine. He also had a Caldwell chronograph as we both hand load. After a few rounds with the pistols, he was using 180 round loads with 30 grains of H-110 and were averaging at 1790 fps. I was shooting 350 grain rounds loaded with 41 grains of H-110 which were averaging 1780 fps.

Now the interesting part the same round in his Marlin was coming out at an average of 1931 fps. In my carbine with the same round as used in my pistol, they were averaging 1946 fps.

Went to the range and shot my Savage Axis lefthanded 308. I call it my working man's rifle. The rig is less than $600.
I only have 30 rounds through the rifle working with 3 different factory loads.
150 grain Winchester Copper Impact
165 grain Hornady Whitetail Interlock
165 grain Underwood Accubond

The Underwood with the 165 Accubonds group the best (1/2" at 100 yards) and will be what I use this season. Unless I can make it to the range for a little more testing.
