Ready For My CCL Renewal Class

I agree that some people should not be carrying a gun. The classes do nothing to prevent those people from doing so. I say this as someone who taught those classes.
Agreed.

Two drivers with licenses- who took a written and practical test- rear ended my son Friday. One in the morning, one in the evening. They knew the two second rule, they knew they were supposed to pay attention to the road, they know they're not supposed to hit the vehicle in front of them. There is no test that's going to predict whether that the subject is going to do something stupid or careless.

In Texas it's 50 rounds with 20 rounds at 3 & 7 yards and 10 at 15 yards. I was told the stages are no longer timed but the online Course of Fire instructions still show timed stages.

Course of Fire: shot on standard B-27 with 5 points for shots inside the area including the 8 ring and 4 points in 7 ring and 3 if within the silhouette. Only 175 points needed to pass.

3 yard line - 20 shots:
  • 1 shot in 2 seconds, 5 times
  • 2 shots in 3 seconds, 5 times (six rounds, four rounds)
  • 5 shots in 10 seconds, once
7 yard line - 20 shots:
  • 5 shots in 10 seconds, once
  • 1 shot in 3 seconds, 5 times
  • 2 shots in 4 seconds, once
  • 3 shots in 6 seconds, once
  • 5 shots in 15 seconds, once

15 yard line - 10 shots:
  • 2 shots in 6 seconds, once
  • 3 shots in 9 seconds, once
  • 5 shots in 15 seconds, once
The last time I had to shoot the qualification I did it with my Detective Special. Pulled two out into the 7 ring at 15 yards.

It’s not really that bad. I just got a bit too “comfortable” in my recliner last night.

We have had every kind of handgun but single shots show up at our IL renewal classes. One guy was told, after we needed to hammer the empties out of his overloaded Security Six, that perhaps he might want to reconsider reloading. He had to go through twice to pass. One guy shot a 50 Desert Eagle. Lots of .22s.
I shot my 29 the last time but usually use either a 1911 or my Max 9.

I qualified with my Colt Combat Commander .45. As it came from Colt's Custom Shop it was the most reliable and the most accurate of all my pistols.

Since this is turning into a Glock vs 1911 thread. As I mentioned previously, I shot my CCW qualification with my most accurate gun at the time. A series 70 Colt Government 45. While being my most accurate pistol it's also one of my most unreliable pistols. I brought a 2nd 1911 with me, a Rock Island GI 45, in case the Colt went down.

These days I carry a Glock. So there!😝😝😝

My groups (which were really nothing to write home about) seemed to amaze the 'Glock kids' that comprised the rest of the class. One asked, "How do you shoot like that, man?" and the instructor (another Glock kid) asked if I was "you know, Secret Service or something" (honestly-it was insane.) I just explained that I was shooting a 1911, and it was essentially cheating. :)
Indeed; the 1911 is essentially cheating. The instructor after looking at my target said, "Don't think you're going to get a discount for just using part of the target".

The fliers were @ 15 yards. I grabbed a pair of wife's reading glasses as I walked out the door because they really sharpened up the sights...........unfortunately, the target looked like I was looking through a drop of water on the lense @ 15 yards! :what:

You're good and glad to see people with the belief that 16+ rounds in a mag is a requirement for self defense...

For the most part, but there are those few who have no business carrying a firearm...
So our Constitutional rights should be dependent on the small number of people who are idiots. Criminals already carry without permits or training. Again it is not some big problem that requires violating the 2nd Amendment.

Bad people travel in packs and no one has ever said "thank God I was carrying a low capacity pea-shooter!" As for idiots..... you can live in a free society with certain risks or you can live in a controlled society where you're disarmed, at the mercy of criminals, and idiots still are still. You can't legislate common sense or morality.

There are a lot of people that live in these unconstitutional states and I guess they just have become accustomed to the government violating the 2nd Amendment.

Who gets to decide who they are?
I'm fine with Constitutional carry. Having said that, though, I've seen applicants miss full-size human silhouette targets at 5 yards, and I wasn't bothered when their instructors told them they would have to do a bit better before being issued a permit.

*Shrug* I've seen fellow cops do the same.... and they're still wearing the badge and carrying a gun. *Shrug*

C'est la vie. I just hope I'm nowhere nearby if any of those fellows ever decide they need to start shooting at someone!

A lot of the kids and their double stacks rolled their eyes when I showed up at the CCClass with this,

They changed their tunes once they realized that someone who actually knows how to shoot quickly and accurately can easily keep up when talking aimed shots. The spray and pray crowd, need not apply.

Our state local laws call for a course of fire involving 24 rounds each at 3, 5, and 7 yards, using the B-27 target. 70% must impact the 7 ring or better, and there's no time limit. In other words, it's a really big target right up in your face, and you've got all day. I've always been casual about it, either taking my time to ensure one big hole, or else just kind of dumping them in and getting it over with. One time around, though, the cool kids made fun of my revolver, so I did my best Miculek/moonclip impression. The group wasn't super impressive, but it was a passing score, and I was pretty smug about my cumulative time. When the cool kids started trooping back into the classroom 20 minutes later, I made sure to rub it in.

I make it easy on myself now. I use my Ruger MKII and bring four magazines...cheap, accurate, dependable...

Taking my renewal CCL class for the People’s Republik of Illinois this Saturday and I’m ready as hell. People bitch about the length of time it takes for a 1911 guy to shoot 30 rounds (10 at 10 yards, 10 at 7 yards and 10 at 5 yards) but I’m ready.

Is there a time limit for each distance?
Locally (California) there are time limits for drawing and scoring at each distance.
PS...my carry is the Glock 36 (45ACP) since my 1911 is too difficult to carry concealed and too heavy for my old bod.

In California, we have to qualify with the exact gun we intend to carry - and if you want to carry more than one, you have to shoot each one in order to have it listed on your permit. (That's why Los Angeles is so safe.)

Either that is a brand new requirement, or just local to your county (or trainer, even). I've re-upped my California permit at three or four different places in Orange County CA and have never seen a time limit - or, in fact, even been allowed to draw from a holster!

The shooting part of our qualification is all at 15 yards and is not timed. They just need to make sure you're holding the right end of the gun. ;)

Maybe it is by county? Here is Ventura County's rules:
8. AGENCY QUALIFICATION STANDARDS a. Pursuant to Cal. Penal Code § 26165(3)(b), a licensing authority shall establish, and make available to the public, the standards it uses when issuing licenses with regards to the required live-fire shooting exercises. i. Live-fire Qualification A. Include draw and fire from method of carry. Must pass complete course with each weapon approved for carry. B. Minimum two draws each station, two rounds each to the body, from 3, 7, 10, and 15 yards on a “B27” or “IPSIC” type target. Times: 5 seconds, 5 seconds, 5 seconds, 10 seconds. C. Passing score is all rounds on target, no complete misses.

It must be. That isn't remotely like the course we take in Orange County. Ours is much, much easier, to the point that I don't see it accomplishes much - although people still fail it...
