I need a .40 S&W - Sig 229 (just thoughts)? or a Glock 23

I do enjoy my Sig 229 Elite, bought it last month for $350, used of course. I don't have a G23, but I do several G22s and a G35. I have more trigger time with the G35, so kinda prefer it, but the 229 is really good.

If you search around, you'll find a video that pretty much proves that 9mm, and 10mm, and .40 S&W, and .45 ACP perform so similar in ballistic gelatin, that there's not enough "performance" difference to justify one versus the other. Bullet construction has pretty much made all the "versus" arguments moot. The .45 does make a bigger hole in paper. Which helps a bit with scoring. But "cutting the line" to make what would have been a 6 actually score as a 7 doesn't help me much toward winning anything.

Then you'll look at your "collection" and wonder why you spent all that money on all that stuff that's just another color of the same thing.

I know I have.

I still want a .357 SIG upper for my SIG. And for my Glock. Then I get to buy more reloading supplies and find room to store it all. And explain to my wife why the bank balance is low. Its a viscious circle. All so I can shoot at the same targets. And BIG GROUPS. They say I shoot BIG GROUPS. I'm OK with my groups. But there's ALWAYS SOMEONE BETTER AND FASTER. At this point it won't be me.

They say the .357 SIG does things that the 9 and the 10 and the 40 and the 45 won't do. All I know is EMPTYING A WALLET is something they all do pretty good.

Note the P229 was designed for the .40 S&W.

Until the Gen 5 guns, the G23 was little more than a G19 with a .40 S&W barrel. The 3-pin design was to fix problems with the .40S&W guns, the Gen 4 was designed to fix problems with the .40 S&W guns, and the Gen 5 finally put a heavier slide on the .40 S&W guns. We'll see if that's the answer.

Don't rule out a Beretta 96 if you cross paths with one. Or, if you have a 92, look for a 96 top 1/2 to convert that over.
In fairness to the Glock fans, the Beretta 96 is another gun that was originally a 9mm gun that Beretta tried to make work with .40 S&W. The slanted dust cover, the Brigadier slide, and the frame buffer in the 92A1/96A1 were all attempts at making the .40 S&W work in the 90 Series guns. Considering all the 90 Series models Beretta now offers - probably more than they've ever offered - they currently offer only one model in .40 S&W, the 96A1, and my guess is Beretta would rather you shoot .40 S&W out of the PX4 or APX, two guns designed around the .40 S&W round.

used G23 here are $450~
used 229 here are $450~
If they are the same price, and the SIG isn’t beaten up, I: say buy the SIG.

Here in SoCal, checking the local chain store consignment list shows people’s asking prices for Glock 22-23 .40 at $400-$500, and SIG 229 .40 $850-$1,100.

Stay safe.

If they are going for the same price and you already have a G23, The 229 would seem the obvious choice. Plus I like that I can have my thumb over the hammer as I reholster

I carried a SIG 229 in .40 for a while as it was our departments issued pistol. A lot of departments went back to 9mm and traded in the 229...that's where a lot of the really inexpensive one come from; and they are a great buy

Only .40 I have left are a 1911 and a Sig Pro 2022.
Owned a P229, G27 and a S&W 4009.
It's a good caliber, my favorite to shoot is the 1911

I have a G22 and a P229. The P229 is one of my very favorite handguns. The Glock is okay.

You can get 9mm conversion barrels for either. I already have one for the Glock, and the one for the Sig will be my next firearms purchase.

I had one.

It was a good pistol, but kicked more than my full size BERETTA 96D Brigadier or my BERETTA 96D Vertec. Both are larger pistols, so no surprise. Also, the BERETTA'S had better triggers.
On the positive side, the 229 is a reliable, proven gun that is in the mid size range that can be used for open carry or concealed. I have a SIG 229 DAK right now in .357 SIG and plan to get a .40 S&W barrel for it. It should be a drop and I really like th DAK trigger.
If I can find a SIG 229 DAK in 9m.m., I will pick it up as well.

Overall, it is an excellent gun, but the finish will wear with use fairly fast. I also recommend night sights and for car or home us, a rail light..

I had a GLOCK 22 and found the recoil too strong to be comfortable, with the 155 grain jhp I carried at the time.

A metal frame helps to absorb some of the recoil.

As mentioned, LE agencies are trading in their .40 S&W's for 9mm guns. The S&W M&P in .40 S&W is another popular LE gun that may be available used. The advantage the M&P has over the Glock is that the M&P was designed for the .40 S&W and not the 9mm.

Buy Glock 23 now (Consider LE trade in for even more savings ... Don't worry, they will shoot like new Glocks ... Shot over 120,000 rounds through my G17 and several hundred thousand rounds more through G22s for USPSA and they did fine ;)) and using 40-9mm conversion barrel/AA 22LR slide kit, you can save on ammuniton to buy another gun of your choice EVERY YEAR.

You are welcome. 😁

I got 2 very boring and predictable Glock (17 & 17L). I think the Sig 229 Police trade-in might be under valued. I believe it was $450~ish at my Tacticool shop. Better jump on the Sig Arms 1990 229’s before people decide they are the New S&W semi-Auto from the 80’s. Those S&W Semiautos have gone crazy in price.

Glock 23 will always for 100 years still be there.

I also don’t own any Sig’s, really want to try the Brick Gun

After working with new issue 1911s in my unit's armory in the Army (They were pretty rough out of the box to not even reliably cycle the slide ... I did foster my liking for 1911s though), I fell in love with X-Files FBI issue pistol and bought a German made Sig P226.

Yes, it was buttery smooth (Nothing like military issue 1911s) and I shot USPSA matches along with 1911.

But on one "Bring your other guns" match practice days, fellow match shooter suggested I try his factory stock Glock 17. I had already laughed off Glocks as, "Who makes guns out of plastic? That's crazy" but after his insistence, I ran the practice match stage. To my surprise, I got pretty decent stage time with comparable double-tap accuracy. Thinking it was a fluke, I ran the stage again getting comparable double-tap accuracy but faster stage time.

"What? How?" was my reaction ...

Long story short, I ended up selling the P226 and bought Glock 17 and kept getting faster and faster stage times, even with factory trigger. Then I kept buying Glocks after Glocks (G17, G19, G26, G21, G30) then replaced USPSA caliber to 40S&W and competed with two G22s and bought G23, G27 ... Now I am in search of G20SF so I could shoot 40S&W out of it as I have a ton of components. :)

Since some could not believe shot groups obtained with BE-86 and factory stock Glock 22 (With well broken-in trigger), I asked THR member Dudedog to verify next range test in person and got the below group - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...ick-plated-bullets.761471/page-4#post-9646469

You inspire me to pullnout the Glocks for load testing RMR 147 Match Winners that just came in yesterday.

Lets do a 9mm load test!
STi 9mm
Glock 17 & 17L
Bull 1911 Government

I’ll start load test of .40 once I get them in. Yes, I’ll eventually get a G23 Gen3

I'm not wild about the 40 but I have one- a Glock 23. It is mostly used as a "woods gun/hunting sidearm".
.40 is like 10mm but shorter, most factory.40
is WEAK SAUCE! I will be loading my .40 to light 10mm range!

HOTT PISTOL TIME

Anybody ever try this gun? I have a junk load of .40 components and only 1 gun.

there seam to be a bunch around used.

Or should I stick to a Glock 23, had one 10 years ago. Liked it ok
Buy the SIG. The 226 and 229, to me anyway, are the perfect platform for the .40 S&W cartridge. I can't think of any other .40 (other than possibly the Beretta 96, which I personally like a lot) that handles the .40 S&W as well.

Unfortunately, with our new law, you're gonna have to downsize from the 12 round mags to 10 rounders (but it'd be the same with the 23 (13 down to 10) unless you ah, er, um, already own a stash you've been keeping for a rainy day...

The Glock 23 is a dime a dozen, the SIG is superior, especially for the .40 S&W.

If anything I would get a .357 Sig barrel to go with it.
That too! A relatively forgotten round, but quite worthy and effective.

Before the new AWB and mag ban took effect, I bought up multiple mags, in pairs and triples, for pistols I don't currently own, in anticipation of buying these guns when they started getting dumped... Of course, it's illegal to sell them in the state now, so I guess I'll just have to buy guns for 'em...

Yeah, that movie stunk, but Rebecca DeMornay was hot...
