My Newest Rifle, CZ 457 Varmint 22lr

Picked it up today and did a little bit of trigger work. I also mounted the Vortex 6 X 18 44mm scope.

Just a " plinker " but I want it to be accurate so I ordered a Jard trigger for it. I'm too old to be able to see what I'm doing anymore and I shake too much for the tiney screws to be worked on.
This is exactly what I've been kicking around buying for idk, 3 years about. Maybe slightly different scope specs though, something capable of a lower power range. The CZ 457 is a beaut, none of my local areas here in the northeast have them in stock, ever. I'm hoping to visit a few shops in SC when I visit some folks and I am going to bring enough money to buy one if I can find one. If I can't, ill just spend it on tattoo's lol 😆

When I got my 453 I was all excited to wring it out. I got some expensive and some very expensive ammo and wasted it trying to get great groups out of the gate. Found out later that it needs at least a good break in or you’re wasting time and money

After first cleaning the barrel, I’d suggest at least the first hundred or so rounds be with a cheaper ammo like Federal Auto Match. mine went from maybe 3 to 4 inch groups to easily sub 1” using the old Wolf Match Extra

nice rig. Should shoot well

How many rounds can you expect to get out of a barrel before you see degrading accuracy. 10K? 25k? Not sure why it never occurred to me to ask before now, I know competition shooters and members here, RFC will know the answer, somebody has had to have shot one out.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I seriously doubt one would ever shoot a barrel out - at least with most rimfire ammo. These aren’t like CF rifles with a big powder charge pushing a jacketed bullet at 2800fps. Folks over at RFC frequently discuss swapping barrels, but I don’t ever recall it being because they shot the old one out.

I was kind of wondering based on that, wasn't sure why one would swap bbls

We could probably start a new thread on this topic alone. Lots of rimfire folks like to tinker, modify, and/or shoot itty bitty groups - either for fun, bragging rights, or in competition. Factory barrels can be hit or miss, but there are a number of match-grade aftermarket alternatives, and a number of platforms (e.g., 10/22, CZ457) make the swap relatively easy.

Modern .22lr barrels probably take more damage from over-aggressive cleaning than actual shooting. Properly cared for, I doubt its possible to "shoot" one out.

I suppose it could be a thing with jacketed .22 Mag and the .17s- we're still talking tens of thousands of rounds, though.

A CZ457 Varmint in .22LR isn't what I consider a varmint rifle. It's sort of a "plinker", in my book and probably not as versatile as a souped-up 10-22, but that's just my opinion, after having both.

Nice! I have a Pro Varmint myself with a 6-24 Vortex Viper HS and a SilencerCo Sparrow suppressor. The CZs are really quite good rifles. Mine will shoot CCI SV in basically the same spot no sweat.

That is a nice looking rifle. I have had my vision fixed but am well acquainted with the shakey hands. Wish there was a fix for them but there is only medication and the longer you live the worse they become.

I have never known of a shot out 22 rimfire barrel. Heat is what gets barrels and the 22 doesn't generate enough. I have changed only 2 and that was a quest for improved accuracy. It worked in both cases. Both of these have lost a little in the accuracy department but I see it as a shooter that has aged 20 years and has increased shakiness which now included a little in my neck. It's hard to duplicate everything exactly when your brain is telling your muscles to do something to mess you up.
