Mini14 fails to pick up round from magazine

RUGER sent me a PRE-PAID FEDEX label

it’s enroute now

….fingers crossed

UPDATE:

I got an 0844am email stating "We have completed work on your Ruger firearm and are now preparing it for shipment"

I called and she said they were having phone trouble, her voice was picket fencing badly, but I think I heard -
replaced extractor
adjusted op rod
polished hammer
and something else.

The email stated I'd get a tracking number when it ships,....nothing yet.

Ruger CS is great, it should be back home to you soon.

One other thing I just thought of involves the tendency of some AR shooters to hold onto the magazine well while shooting. With an AR, one can hold the gun and pull back on the magwell to hold it. This does not put any pressure on the inserted magazine to affect the firing cycle.

IMG_4545.jpeg

With a mini not having a protruding magazine well, pulling back on the mag itself using this shooting style can cause feeding issues ( I have seen it happen to others on the range and have done it shooting minis myself).

If this is a way the gun was being fired, it could have affected it. If not, hopefully Ruger fixed what was ailing it and its good to go.

Let us know how it goes.

Stay safe.

... gas bushing that's to small, or
... extra power recoil spring
... buffer to the rear that's too thick.
There are multiple things that have to be balanced in a semiauto.

Over-gassing "fixed" by installing a stronger recoil spring and a buffer pad can speed up and shorten the bolt stroke to where the bolt is closing faster than an in-spec magazine spring can push a cartridge to proper position in the magazine feed lips (or so I have read/heard, not that I have "fixed" a too fast bolt/slide problem by over springing or adding buffers).

FEDEX delivered it back today.

I went out after work to do a quick test

this time I used Factory Win.556 55gr, and more NORMA 55gr.

I shouldered the weapon firmly, no "magwell hold", and fired about one per second.

got through 3 20 round mags 100%

Let it cool, and tried again.

Second test had one failure to strip, as before.

DAMMIT

so, one failure per 120 rounds, actually one failure per 150 rounds, because afterwards I tried some of my handloads and they were 100% reliable.

Late for supper, I wrapped it up.

I will ponder this some, and think about what to do next.

possibly try some WOLFF magazine springs

Do some rapid fire. I hate to say it... but sometimes semi-auto rifles need a little break in.

I find my Mini-14 Tactical, that I haven't shot in years, liked to have the bolt locked back when doing mag changes at the start.

I picked up a Ruger SFAR recently, seems Ruger recommends a 200rd break in on that rifle.

UPDATE:

Shot 100 rounds of factory Federal 55gr FMJ

shot 60 rounds of handloaded 62grHPBT / WC846

shot 40 rounds of handloaded 55grSP / win748

100% reliable

Maybe it simply doesn't like NORMA or Winchester white box, and Ruger fixed it ?

I will continue to shoot and test it. I like the new TECHSIGHT rear sight and wood stock.

Weird how it was cranky, but glad to hear it seems to be working like it should.

Put another 100 rounds of my 55grSP and 62grHPBT handloads through it ... 100% reliable again
Maybe ... Ruger fixed it ?
Looks that way as invoice stated, "RANGE TEST ... COMPLETED ... NO ISSUES"

I love happy endings. :) 👍
