I'm not big into shotguns (more rifles and handguns), my only one is a cheap Winchester 1300 Defender I bought myself in the 90's and it's used strictly for home defense, has seen maybe 300 rounds, sits in the corner of my kitchen. I take good care of my stuff, but this is the ugly stepchild that has been neglected. I've never once cleaned it and had a hard time getting it apart. I had to towel-wrap the action in a vice and towel-wrap the bbl and use vice grips. I have broken down to: bbl, pump handle with arms, action and magazine together, bolt assembly, trigger assembly. I'd rather not get into the trigger or bolt assembly, but they both look filthy.

Last time at the range I decided to pattern some #2 buckshot and the thing felt sticky as I cycled it.

I'm wondering the best way to clean bolt and trigger assembly, I can handle the rest? My two thoughts are let it soak in some sort of gun cleaning solvent over nights, or just brush and solvent it the best I can, then use an air compressor. Any other ideas? What would you do?

Also, doesn't look easy to put back together but I can find some videos or willing to look at some links if you've got one you like.

Funny story if you want keep reading:

I really bought this for slugs and bear protection. I used to houseboat on Lake Shasta, and every night you tie up the boat and use a gate and a plank to get off the front patio on to land. Well, wife and I were sleeping on the front patio with the gate open and the plank down (brilliant I know). Sure enough, middle of night, a bear walked right up that plank, 18" from me, and stole a rather large ice chest and drug it down the plank. Bear dropped it half way down the plank and just devouring anything it could open, including a gallon of milk. I was like mid 20's and only had a 9mm. I fired a few rounds over the bears head to scare it off, and it just sat there and looked at me, then everyone else as they woke up. It left when it was darn ready.

10-15 minutes later I could hear screams a few hundred yards away and what sounded like rimfire. (lol)

Professional bear.

Liberally spray everything down inside and out with Hornady 1-Shot (BLACK CAN) Cleaner-Lube
Work the action a dozen times.

Respray inside and out and let excess gook drip out the bottom.

Let dry (coupla minutes).
Done

I have a 1300, it got difficult to run the action because the operating rod from the pump forearm to the bolt broke on one side where it was spot welded to the tube that holds the forearm together.

The rods on mine are in good shape. I got it figured how to reassemble, but instead of setting the bbl all the way, I left it loose, get it apart again to give it a good cleaning first - haven't done that yet. I was just really curious how to get it back together.

Interesting, the ammo I used which felt sticky, is new stuff never used before, it could be the issue. It's wasn't number 2 buckshot in the original post, it was "Estate" brand 00 buck off Midway. Two's and two zero's confused.

Thanks for the input, and you too MEHavey. I'm more of an 3N37 VV fan though, in 9mm.
