For whatever reason I've been wanting one of the new S&W 500s in the 4 inch bbl. But they are priced pretty steep and it really doesn't fit into any nitch I may have. It's not like grizzlys or polar bears roam free in Massachusetts.

Then early last week a friend of mine shows me a post from another thread. A guy in my area is selling his 500 that he just bought last month and it's still not been shot. :what: You have got to be kidding me. Who buys a gun and never shoots it? Of course you know I had to get in touch with the guy.

So final outcome: MINE!!!! S&W 500 w/ 4 inch bbl, two boxes of Bullseye ammo and a S&W over the shoulder holster for $825! I easily saved $200 or more if I had bought the thing directly from the dealer.

Oh boy, tonight is the maiden voyage!!!! :D Here's a pic. Same as any other 500, but I had a picture so I figured I'd throw it up. ;)

Has anyone removed the Hogue grips and put on some wood grips? If so, where did you get them.

Dang. Why couldn't you have bought that before the meet? :neener:

That's one heck of a toy. I'm jealous... three more years, three more years... :D

miles of smiles!

You will love the 500.

I'm partial to ammo from Hornady - their 350 and 500 grain jacketed rounds are quite fun. If I were you, I'd get set to reload because

1: ammo for the 500 ain't cheap.
2: shooting the 500 is like eating potato chips - you can't stop at just one!

Ohhhhh Smurfslayer you speak the truth! I took it out to play last night and oh man was that fun!!! I was using some BullsEye 350 gr lead ball and it was fun. Gotta get some bigger loads to see how they shoot.

Majic, I guess your right. A lot of people buy and sell without shooting. I think though that if the guy I bought this from had shot it, he would of never sold it. In this case, I'm glad he never shot it. ;)

Posted it for viewing.Nice gun by the way.

Im jealous. Ive been toying with the idea of getting that exact gun. I was even going to go to a local shop down the road that has one on consignment to oggle it today. well gtg

Nice gun. Shooting USA just featured it in their show on OLN, good reviews and superior energy transfer. Thanks for the regurgitated pictures :neener: .

What are you talking about just because you havent been atacked by a polar bear doesnt mean it cant happen. Anyone without a 500 for polar bear protection is being irresponsible they should issue them with your drivers licence I think. I've had it with this best case senerio way of thinking. I live in Nevada but I got mine right here cause I know how clever bears can be today with the internet and all.

Ya just never know !!!!!! id carry the .500 S&W for a last resort you should also keep a .375 H&H mag in your trunk... and some sort of belt fed full auto.... preferably nothing smaller than 7.62, you never know when their going to attack in groups !! :what:

Hehe on a more serious note, hows the recoil on that thing?

Hi Werewolf. The 500 has a compensator for lead and one for jacketed ammo. The way they lock the compensator in place makes it pretty easy and quick to change them out.

MINOR THREAD HIJACK:

One for lead and one for jacketed. I'm sooooooooo confused!

Why the difference, what are the differences between the two compensators.

Inquiring minds want to know...really - I've had my eye on a S&W in .500 for a while but so far can't see my way past the price (gotta work up to it - slowly - sneak up on it - and then one day just say screw it and POUNCE)

I wonder how much fun shooting the .500 would be, if one were alone at the range?? Can't imagine that it'd be too thrilling.

Werewolf - To be honest I'm not exactly sure why they offer the two compensators. They indicate in the safety manual to use the correct compensator with the ammo your shooting.

Rockstar - I have to disagree with you on this one. I've been to the range with this on my own and had just as much fun as when I was with the group.

As a side note, those damn golf balls were sure hard to find after they flew over the 100 yrd berm when I got a direct hit on one with that 500!! :D

When you said "Bullseye" ammo, I though now how in h@ll would you shoot bullseye with that gun...then I saw that "Bullseye" is the name brand of the ammo (LOL).

I see the pricetag on the ammo...$29.95 for 20 rounds. So the price has come down from when these were first introduced, and Cor-Bon was the only one producing factory ammo for it at $40.00+/box

i got an opportunity to shoot both the 4" and the 10 inch models.

The 10 inch wasn't bad, it was scoped, and had the rubber hogues on it.

The 4" had some gorgeous wood hogues on them. I only shot one cylinder through it! Wasn't pleasant, at least for me.

they are interesting guns though!

Take a pic with your hand in the picture (preferably holding it with finger off the triger) so we can see some size.

I personaly own a gun that I have never fired (pa-63). Just havn't been able to get to the range yet.

.500's are great guns. Can hit bullseye's all day long. Most of the time I shoot in my backyard range by myself. It's just a larger caliber. It's a good accurate and safe gun to use. Very flexable too. Sure, you can shoot elephant rnds, but the 325 gr rnds are as mild as a .44 IMO. I have three sizes. My shooter being the 8". I'm an average size guy. I have no problems shooting one handed with 325,335 gr rnds. I plink with my RBH .44 so I'm not that recoil shy. The 4" hardly has recoil to it. It's more of an overall concussive effect. My wife shoots it easily. Try one, you'll like it
