I thought you'd get a kick out of this revolver taken off the street. In typical ghetto fashion, partially loaded, 2 rounds of LRN.

I thought the picture was better than this sorry guys.

KaceCoyote, back in the day a professional shooter and rep for Colt, J Henry Fitzgerald, had a custom revolver named the "Fitz Special". It was usually a large framed Colt snubby with the trigger guard cut away like this. A lot of big name folks carried these guns as personal defense guns.

I thought it was neat to see a ghetto modernized version.

He forgot to bob the hammer.... :uhoh:

Wonder where he got the idea? Somehow I don't think he ever saw an original Fitz Special. Must be that great minds think alike, but Fitz always cut the guard in front of, not behind the trigger. If what was left got bent up a little he would have had a revolver that only the Brady Bunch could love... :what::D

Looks like there is a Ghetto Gunsmith in Cleveland. Seems the bad guys are going back to revolvers. They watch CSI like it is a Graduate Class. They like the casings to stay with the gun, seems to be the trend anyway.

What about the bullets? Isn't that where most of the ID's come from? Hard to keep those in the gun too and do any good! :neener:

Smith & Wesson's are a bit difficult to make into a true Fitz-gun because of the location of the cylinder stop spring (or plunger, spring and screw as the case may be). That's why you see the hump there the Colt version is straight.

The Fitz "Specials" were designed to be pocket guns. While Colt made some, they were never cataloged.

They were considered to be a "professional's weapon."

If you "Fitz" a Ruger SA you'd get the same problem. Still, in this S&W specimen the hump is very nicely smoothed and won't cause any problem.

I wonder if anyone has ever clocked the difference in a quick draw and fire in a revolver with the trigger guard cut off in front and one with it intact. Does anyone think it would make that big of a difference?

Well at least one very experienced user said it did. Charles Askins Jr. racked up a double-digit body count while serving as a border patrolman in the El Paso, Tex. Division during the late 1930's and early 40's. Another satisfied owner was the late Col. Rex Applegate, and while he preferred Colt automatics, William Fairbrain of Fairbrain & Sykes fame also recommended the Fitz design.

Speaking from personal experience, it is much easier to get ones finger placed on the trigger when the gun is confined in a pocket, if the front of the trigger guard is cut away. :uhoh:

There may be another advantage of the Fitz trigger.

Under major stress, when you clench your finger on the "trigger" you may not be 100% sure you're hitting the trigger, or triggerguard. So how do you tell the difference? You flex it a bit. Whoops.

Yeah, enough training negates that...we hope.

But with the Fitz, there's only two possible finger positions: straight out ahead or on the trigger ready to fire. No guessing around with an intermediate state - because there ain't one.

I think it would be a fraction of a second quicker on the draw.

IIRC Charles Lindbergh was another high profile carrier of the Fitz Special.

:what: Rustynuts, actually as much can be told from a casing as a bullet, some times more. Ever look at a bullet after it has hit something, not always a prestine specimen. But what do I know, I have only spent the last 10 years investigating Homicides, LOL Bill.
