I`m thinking of buying a Savage model 12 in the .308 caliber. The price of this rifle is $719.00. Do any of you guys have any experience with this model?
I`ve read some reviews on it and also read that it won a few awards but a few "hands on" reviews from you guys a THR would be helpful and probably better so , Yes or No?

I have a 12VLP in .223, so yes and no. It is an awesome gun, as accurate as any I've yet shot (and I've shot a few). Factory ammo was very good, handloads at the 'proper' COAL are amazing. In a nutshell, I would never even consider selling this rifle, that's how much I enjoy it.

I've got a 12FV in .204 Ruger and its an amazingly accurate rifle. A good friend bought the 10FP in .308 (basically the 12 with a shorter barrel) and it's a tack driver as well, so I'd definitely say yes, go for it. My last four rifles are Savages in one model or another - I'm sold on their accuracy. The prices ain't bad, either :D

I have Savages in 6.5x55, 223, 223AI, 338-06, and 6.5x47L. All exceptional shooters. The 308 is just a little ordinary for me. My 1-7 223 Model 12 is my 500 yard F-Class gun. That sure seems like a high price to me.

Well, shilen barrel: 300
plus: action vice: 30, wrench: 38, head space gauges 20
new trigger: 100-300
new stock: 150- to whatever
tune the gun by gunsmith: pick a number between 100 and 1,000,000

New bolts, bolt faces, bigger knobs, blah blah blah, the list goes on and on :)

Which model 12, the FV should be around $500-525. But they are very good rifles for the money. Mines in .243, this is completely stock shooting my handloads.

hey Ski; I would really like to hear bout that 6.5 x 47; the ammo, the loads, the rifle, where you got the bbl, all the good stuff...

I have a savge 12fv in .223 its a tackdriver at a hundred yards i can hit a quarter all day long with wolf ammo! they are great guns mines a heavy sob I bought it for hunting not knowing how heavy it was with a scope it weighs 10lbs not exactly your carry around gun if it was a bench shooter it would be awsome. Mine cost 458.00 with a bsa 6-24x44 platinum target scope 124.00 for a grand total of 582.00 awsome.:D

I found a used (two owner) Shilen Supermatch barrel in 6.5x47 Lapua, with brass and dies, on the Savageshooters forum for under $250. Another guy there sold me a short action with a PRI 0 MOA base for $290, and I found a B&C Medalist stock for $150. For loads, I read the articles by THR forum member Zak Smith on his website, and tried some loads above and below his favorite load. His favorite load worked well.

Took me about 30 minutes to put the barrel on, and put it in the stock. Still need to bed it. May put a SSS trigger in it. I'm going to play with seating depth on the 123g Lapua bullets, maybe tighten it up some. Not much recoil at all. Sighted it in 10" high @ 100, and I was 6" high at 500, so my loads may be a little hotter than I thought.

I have the rife in 308 and it’s been better then I though it would be. I used 168 gr SMK 44 gr varget and lupua brass and cci primers and have got excellent groups. I recently purchased one of the Savage 12 FTR in 308 and am selling the 12 Low pro. It’s only fired about 200 rounds and the gun was properly broken in. It has a 6x24x56 Millet Mil-dot scope and a Harris bi-pod. Let me know if you interested.
I can send you pics.

Go for it

I have 5 Savage model 12 BVSS's and 2 VLP's and they all shoot amazingly well. They shoot so well in fact that I just went out and got the Savage BTVS in 17 HMR.:D I did own a BVSS in 308 but never put much effort into it. It would shoot a little better than an inch for 5 shots at 100 yards with factory ammo and my first handloads. As I said, I probably didn't put enough effort into it. My other guns will all routinely shoot about 1/2 MOA.:D

Ski: that is truly awesome. I have been looking for a mild mannered 6.5, and was thinking of the 6.5 whisper, but I am thinking this sounds more my size. So 10 inches high, and still only 6 inches high at 500? Unbelievable. i am thinking this sounds like a great round , for all diff types of reloading purposes, and economical at that.

I've heard great (very great) things about the 12bvss. Now that I see how inexpensive the 12FV is, when I decide to get a high-powered rifle, can you guess what it'll be?

I got the 10" @ 100 to be zeroed at 500 from the JBM ballistics calculator. You can google that, but I had to guess on what velocity to enter. Zak's website is http://demigodllc.com/. The Lapua website probably has a ballictic chart too.

Mexico could you give some details on parts?
I know that you`re on both threads so sorry if its a bother ok.
