This one sure isn't:
I had been looking for one to go with my Security Six....
I wanted a .38 Special Speed Six. I looked for about a year and gave up. None to be found. Then, at a little shop in Maine, I was looking for everything but a Speed Six....Funny what you find ~ when your not looking:)

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. With the possible exception of the Glock, you can find someone that likes the looks of just about any gun.

In revolvers I prefer blued guns with wood grips. Now those are purdy!

I had one in that very same configuration, only mine was a .357. I got it, like you did, as a companion piece to go with my Security Six. I would love to either one of them back one day.

Giz, that's a good looking Speed Six. Funny that you brought up how long you were looking for one. I've also been on the look-out for a 2&3/4 inch Speed Six .38 or .357 in SS for about 9 months now.

The short barreled Speed Sixes and the S&W M-13's w/ 3 inch barrels are great carry/combat revolvers. I've been lucky in locating two of the M-13's --- took me 2 years to find what I wanted. Now, I'm after the Speed Six.

Thanks for the pics.

PS.. it's good to see you posting here. I'm spending more time here lately. I've also been getting more interested in the Rugers, so I visit the Ruger Forum. Still spend most of my time on the S&W Forum though -- hard to break old habits.

Yes, it's a beauty. Years ago I got one and had the chambers reamed to a .357 mag. Not only did this allow me to use magnum ammo, it ensured that my gunsmith would do a bang up job in the process. So when he was done, all of my chambers were reamed perfectly. He was a stickler for detail and his work made my little revolver extremely accurate.

My barrel also was three inches. Is yours the same?

Also, if you don't mind me asking, how much did this little gem set you back?

As noted, beauty is in the eye...

Aesthetics are completely subjective.

IMO the Glocks and the Ruger DA revolvers are about as ugly as guns can get.

Even cleaned up.

Nobody has to agree.

The 3" in .357 was my agency's issue gun for about fifteen years. Tough little guns, and cop-proof to boot. I had one issued to me but never carried it, preferring a 4" barrel Ruger for better balance, velocity, and as easier to shoot well.

Sometime in the late 80s I picked up a 4" stainless .38 Special, heavy barrel, round butt Six. It was a little-used police trade-in, and the best fitted Ruger I have ever seen; it locks up like a bank vault. Only trouble is that the round butt doesn't handle well for me, which sort of surprised me.

I keep it around just because it's such a well made example of the breed.

Ruger DAs are great guns. But, IMO, they're ugly. Sorry.

Having said that, the problem is not insoluble. Linky.

Handguns fall into a few categories regarding looks:
* Cute
* Ugly
* Really ugly
* Hideous

Some rifles look cool, as do some shotguns. Glocks look horrible, and so does the GP-100, but they're not hideous. My .38 special Model 60 looks cute, but is hell to shoot. They're tools.

What's the best-looking circular saw you ever owned? Don't care? That's my point. GP-100 is a freakin' beast that will take anything. A Glock 19 contains massive fire-power and can be shot almost as fast as an automatic.

Hey good to see some of my pals from the "other forum" that I am now permenantly banned from:uhoh:

To answer some questions: The little beauty set me back $275 and I was pretty pleased with the price. Barrel is 2.75" and feels great. I have a Brauer Bros. holster for a 3" Model 66 that it fits in perfectly....

Nice to see my pals here. Wondered where you guys were hiding....

Oh yeah, Hi SaxonPig....good to see where you went....

Yep, I think it looks good. I don't like the old style revolvers with the exception of the finely made ornamented ones, but I can take most modern ones.

The following is as close to the ideal revolver I've found in terms of looks:

That's just...the quintessential revolver to me. :)

I like the Service Six with the simple sights (like the Speed). I had one and really wish I had not sold it. I prefer the full-lengh back strap and that has kept me from getting any later Ruger revolvers. I like the overall shape of a revolver with a shrouded ejector rod but not the full-under lug. Yeah, I agrree, the Python and 686 do have that something when it comes to revolver shapes (I owned a 586 once). But for me, the elegance of the Service Six, the Colt Trooper Mk III, the S&W 66, those are great looking revolvers.

Ooh! Can I play? :D It may not win the beauty contest, but it won't get laughed off the stage.

Ugly? No, wouldn't say that.

Plain? Yes. My Ruger GP100 is like a plain looking wife who can whip up a delicious meal, keeps a neat home, talented enough to home school the children, has a green thumb, is interesting to talk to, and is great in the sack, in short, does everything right. That's why I love it and is a keeper.

On the other hand, my 686 is a bombshell who can do all the above:) It gets the same affection...well, maybe it gets fondled a little more:D.

I quite like the lines of the GP100 and SP101 alike as far as aesthetics go. I am a fan of pretty much all the Ruger DA wheelguns as far as the looks go, as well as the performance.

The SP101 in any variation I think actually looks much cleaner than a lot of the DAO and shrouded hammer J frames, but otoh I feel the 3" barrel J frames with the exposed hammer look good too, they look "balanced".

The GP100 just flat out looks cool as do the various "Six" series. I want a 2.75" Speed or Security Six so bad...

I don't know if others like it, I just like what they did. Everyone else seems to try to imitate or emulate the Smith and Wesson look, and Ruger did their own thing. No it doesn't look as "elegant" for lack of a better word but it is aesthetically pleasing nonetheless.

But I don't really care what they look like, they perform wonderfully.
