What is the best combat handgun in use today?

hatfried, that was hillarious!!! I'm still LMAO over here. "Canadian Military" that priceless!!:D

I've never been in anything close to anything that could be called "combat"...

Having said that, I'm in league with others here, when I state that my understanding of "combat" dictates that it is not something we seek out, or enter into, without longarms of some kind.

This, in my mind, limits the role of the "combat" handgun to:

Saving our @$$es when, for any reason, we cannot employ our main weapons. This means it needn't be hyper-accurate, but has to work, no matter what, and throw a serious round.

I was going to say an all-steel double-action revolver in .357 or a .45 variant (maybe even ACP on moon clips), as it would be more reliable than even a 1911*.

However, if we wish to take into account the fact that our initial inability to operate our main weapons may also apply to the use of our handguns (disabled hand), the manual-of-arms seems to dictate that the 1911* could be operated far more easily with only one hand than the revolver.

* When I say 1911, we can substitute any gun having its generous tolerances in original US military form, and chambered for a cartridge/projectile combination at least as effective as 45 230gr "ball" (I'm not going to guess as to whether we're limited to FMJ, or can use the latest and greatest expanding bullet technology has to offer).

Combat does not just involve shooting. Steel would probably be better than plastic to hit something or someone with.

Not sure which one is the best since so many out there are reliable, durable and Combat Accurate, but I would suggest placing the Ruger KP345 in the same category as HK, SIG, Glock, etc when it comes to reliability, durability and Combat Accuracy and is a winner in the cost category. :scrutiny:

To arm a large army? Glock 17 or Sig P250, extremely simple, reliable, durable, and relatively cheap to manufacture.

I would have to say the 1911. Not to many of them over here because of the import price but still worth it! Cant argue with a gun design thats nearly a century old and still going strong!

The best combat handgun in use today? Once again, it ain't the bow & arrow, its the Indian! - skeeter_08

Any of the more reliable striker fired semi-auto 9mm or larger in caliber. Why? As a COMBAT weapon, you have to arm people from many different backgrounds who may or may not know and like guns. People who need easy assembly/disassembly procedures, and an easy manual of arms. I suggest Springfield Armory, Glock, Ruger SR9, S&W M&P, etc.

Someone revived a two year old thread. How many read it all the way through?

tipoc

Well tipoc, I'm one of the silly bananas that have read the entire thread. I know, I'm an idiot.:)

I'm not sure why some posters were laughing at the Canadian Military, from what I understand, they've been doing a very professional job over in Afghanistan. Oh well, whatever makes you feel good I suppose.

As for the topic, a lot of folks (not all, bless your literate hearts) have listed their favourite home defense handgun instead of putting themselves in an armorer or quartermaster's position. Not all military activity is storming Omaha beach or taking on the Vietcong single handed.

If you had to arm an entire military organization - from frontline troops to security details to fighter pilots, military police, couriers, etc., both in America and stationed all over the globe...and you had to pay for it out of a budget, which pistol and what ammunition would you choose?

Add the cost of maintaining the weapons, cost of repairs, availability of spare parts, etc. and you can see why most Western militaries have reached a parity when it comes to handguns.

No wait, I changed my mind, the best combat handgun is my Dad's S&W M29, it can blow helicopters out of the sky.

Any number of guns would fit the ticket here: a number of SIGs, the 1911, a handful of Walthers. The bottom line is that the best combat gun in the world, regardless of who makes it, is the one that you have in your hand at the time that you need it most; it's of no use whatsoever if it's on the shelf or left behind in the tent or back in the safe.

my favorite gun to win matches and money with - CZ.

zombies or foreign invaders come - glock in 9mm. cheap, plentiful, and servicing it is easy with the breadth of market availability.

I am leaning toward the CZ75 or the Springfield XDm, I have owned Glocks, Smith's, SIG's, HK, CZ, NUMEROUS 1911's, Colts you name it I most likely either own it or have owned it. The 3rd generation Smith's have one of the best track records out there and were dependable and accurate.

The Sig P226 is also a serious contender. I feel the 1911 is one of the better guns out there for home defense, target and carry, but it can be hard to master in 45acp. Also there have been some inferior quality 1911's in the marketplace that has tarnished the reputation.

The 1911 of my choice of production guns might well be one of the S&W 1911's or one of my early Kimbers. I lost faith in Colt and Springfield in the 80's and early 90's when the quality and reliability went downhill. I also owned 3 Para ordnance guns that were 100% reliable and accurate but the grips were too thick with the double stack mags.

OK, picking just one gun, the Sig P226.
