Recommend some good electronic muffs...

1+ on the Howard Leights. You can also add a pair of in the ear guards if you are around any cannons I have had mine for a couple of years and have been completely satisfied.

Best value for electronic muffs. I'm about to buy a second pair to have as a backup. I bought my first pair when I began shooting competitively and they have served me well ever since. Great product.

you can commonly find the Peltor 6 muffs on sale for around $60. they are excellent muffs for the price. High end like the Comtac and swattac muffs are better but cost more. but there is a difference, you get what you pay for.

Buy once cry once. I had a set of the original comtac Peltors that I gave to my wife when I got a new set of swattacs. She is still using them today... 10 years later.

I buy muffs mainly looking at the NRR (noise reduction rating) Many of the less expensive electronic muffs are in the low 20's. Not good for your hearing...

While they are probably the most expensive muffs out there, I really love my Pro Ears Gold. A 33 NRR of means my ears feel fine after a weekend on a firing line as an instructor with Project Appleseed and the electronics are wonderful. Bulky, yes, expensive, yes. But, how much have you spent on firearms? How much is your hearing worth? How much do hearing aids (that aren't as good as the original equipment) cost? Just my 2c.

Pro Ears Gold here as well. Even the most expensive hearing protection is cheaper than hearing aids later.

I use the HL ones everyone is recommending. If shooting anything other than rimfire or standing under a covered firing line with non-rimfire I double up with foamie plugs. Can still understand conversation and hear (cept when it cuts out for a shot of course) with the plugs in.

Incidently, I always reccomend double up with plugs inside the muffs when on the range, especially on an indoor range. The electronics will increase the volume of people talking or other noise you want to hear enough to hear them over the foamies (or whichever plugs you use), But that shot will be far less with both instead of just muffs.

After shooting for 25 years (15 as an LEO and instructor) and learning at a young age to wear both, I am glad I did, my hearing is still excellent despite what my wife says. (hearing and listening are two different things).

I like the fold-up Peltors. Skinny enough to not interfere too much with a rifle stock, and will go in a large coat pocket. Reasonably priced.

I have the 30 buck Caldwell Low Profile. They work just fine.

Howard Leight Impact Sports with a pair of foam plugs is my regular range hearing apparel.

I have a set of Pro Ears Dimension Plus (not even close to inexpensive) and they are the poorest fitting hearing protection I've ever tried. Worked with their customer service to resolve the issue but they basically gave up in the end. They sit on the shelf now, an expensive paperweight for the most part. They also have a very poor design for a retaining a battery in the battery compartment, IMO. Overall, one of the worst accessories I've spent money on in my 40+ years of shooting.

MSA Sordin Supreme-X and I throw some Surefire or foam plugs underneath.

Think of your ears as an investment you want to protect. When I first bought my MSA's, I just about crapped my pants. After years and years of use, I say it's well worth the money. Seeing family members with hearing loss, I sure don't want to be like them.

This is a great and timely thread as I am considering the purchase of the Peltor Pro Ears Gold.

I also double up with both ear plugs and muffs, mainly because I like to shoot .357 Magnum 125 JHP's with 17.2 grains of 2400 behind them, in both my GP100 4" and SP101 3"... and I will very likely still double up even with the Peltors...

I use the Peltor Tactical 6S'. They perform perfectly and I love the behind the neck wire because it's doesn't interfere with my hat.

This exact topic came up a few years ago. Most everyone then ,as well as now, used the Howard Leights. It stuck in my mind and one day Midway had them on sale. I picked them up and they are great for the price.

If you're going to go with the Pro Ears, there's a $30 rebate right now. Combined with your Optics Planet discount, they're going to come in around $225 out the door. That's still pricey, but not much more than the tax stamp on a suppressor....without all the hassle.

I invested in molded (the good way) plugs for my wife and me this year, so muffs will have to wait a bit. Some good info here, though.

When my old Peltors were lost in The Incident (with house fire) I looked around and the Pro Ears Gold 33 dB had the best specs. So I bought a pair of passive Pro Ears to try the fit and have as a spare to the electronics. After two years all the padding is crumbling. And a friend with the Gold has given up on keeping the electronics working and just wears them as passives.

I haven't tried the Leights, but they get good reviews.
Only 22 dB, so "double plug" with them or anything similar.

My present spares are Peltor 30 dB passives and will go to them when the Pro Ears padding is shot.
I care less about casual conversation on the range than I used to and I can hear the PACT timer well enough.

That's strange, I bought a set of Pro Ears Mag Golds a few years ago and they're still working like new. It's nice being able to use the batteries out of my Surefire flashlights in an emergency.
