On that last pic. is that a Ruger LCP? It's very compact for carry.

All handguns are relatively poor "stoppers" regardless of caliber or bullet used. Shot placement and sufficient penetration are paramount, all else is secondary.
Based on that I wouldn't go any lower than a good .380 loaded w/FMJ or 9mm w/a quality JHP.
Personally, I carry a SIG P290RS in 9mm. It's small & light enough to afford different carry options (ankle, pocket, AIWB, etc) depending upon the magazine used, has a long but very smooth DAO trigger which obviates the need to worry about manipulating a manual safety under stress (think semi-auto revolver) and I shoot it more accurately than I should be able to shoot such a small pistol.
As mentioned earlier, it still boils down to using whatever caliber/bullet/action combo that you shoot best.

Yes handguns with limited range. But just curious I have seen .45 ACP 230 grain bullets shot and you can see as the bullet falls like throwing a rock. With the 9mm will it go a further distance / have more penetration since the trajectory of bullet is going to be alot more flatter at same range. Does this mean the 9mm 115 gr. has more range and penetration over a .45 230 grain? i.e. 9mm more likely to penetrate a car door / barracade than the .45 ACP

im thinking a 9mm and lower semi auto single stack lightweight frame

That would be a very good option. I carry one myself. Mine's a KelTec PF-9. I also use a S&W Model 3913.

Depends on what Im shooting the most...either G19,G23, or lately Kimber TLE II. One of the two is EDC. If I decide to get a 357 Sig, It may well end up as EDC.
I had just gotten an XDs, but it was recalled before I could get any time firing it.

I carry a CZ 75 with 18+1 of +P Critical Duty 135g.
Sometimes a S&W 10-6 with +P 158g LSWCHP.

Although I don't hide mine. Except for the Taurus TCP 738 in my back weak side pocket with Critical Defense loaded 6+1.

If you're so far away that you have to worry about bullet drop, you're either not in a defensive situation, or you've made a very poor life decision and are shooting back at a rifleman.

With non expanding ammunition, 9mm does indeed have a slight edge in penetration of hard targets, but I'm not sure that holds true with modern ammo.

Personally, I would hesitate go lower than 9mm unless I absolutely needed a smaller gun than I could find in that clambering. Performance starts to drop off rapidly as you move down to .380, .32 or .25 cal. Kahr, Ruger, and others make excellent 9mm sub compact or "pocket" size pistols these days so I feel no need to look for anything smaller.

As a generic recommendation, with no other information about the user's size, experience, carry method, etc. I tend to recommend the Glock 19. It's a great combination of size, shootability, and capacity for both OC or CC. Loaded with modern, high performance JHP ammo the 9mm will perform very well.

If you want something slimmer, Kahr makes a number of single stack 9mm pistols in full, compact and sub compact size that are worth a look.

That's not the point or concern about range. We have rifles if we want to up that. I am not concerned about that because these are handguns that have very limited range. It just a comparison as I can see the .45 drop.

Thanks Mike.

The LC9 is definitely larger and needs deeper/bigger pockets to pocket carry.

Personally, I don't like shooting 9mm Para from such a small gun because of the unpleasant felt recoil and the slower follow-up shots.

Of course you might have hulk hands, so your mileage may vary.

Ive been shooting 20 plus years pistols before the ban in the UK and now rifles and muzzle loading pistols. I have only loaded a gun for protection once and it wasnt in the UK ,I was in South Africa visiting the inlaws and the house alarm went off next door ,my instinct was to load my farther inlaws cz in 7.65 and investigate all was clear but i was prepaired .

Was leaving Detroit lake with the family today, stopped at the first rest area so the missus can run the kids in to the bathroom.

I hobble out, in O.C. mode, to drop a few bucks in the pot with the vets running the coffee-and-information trailer, and end up groping the gentleman's Diambondback .380 with Crimson Trace, while he fondled the Sambar stag on my .45 Colt Blackhawk.

The point? Everyone will have a different answer, at different times, in different locales, and most of them will work when we need them to. So get to feeling up everything you can find and start collecting.

I was at work ones called to secure a home the guy had died (i work for a company that rents lowcst homes ) the police were called as per any dead body .The nearest police were the armed responce unit ie 2 firearmes trained officers ,they both carried sigs im not up on sig models but they were in 9mm .the 1 police officer was a lefty he had his holster on the left leg but the gun was set up right handed ,i asked why he hasnt changed the mag catch to left and i could not belive the answer he said the gun is not only his its a general issue gun .so in short every time his on duty he could be carring a different gun .how is he supposed to deffend himself and others if he carnt train and get to know his firearm .

Has any 1 had to point a gun at an attacker did the presence of the gun stop the attack or was a shot needed?
That's really the wrong question to ask.

One certainly hopes it never gets to that point, but if you are going to pull a gun, you had better be prepared to shoot. In spite of the fact that most defensive gun uses are accomplished without a shot being fired, many predators can sense when a person is nor prepared to actually use the gun and will continue to press their attack.
