I was cleaning my daily carry Sig P238 last night, gave the sights a shot of Birchwood Casey Gun Scrubber (which is supposed to be synthetic safe) and the paint in the white dot sights melted and washed out.

Should I try calling Birchwood Casey and ask why their "synthetic safe" cleaner ruined my sights? I feel like that wont go far.

Should I call Sig and ask them for new sights?

Or should I just buy new ones, original or night sights, and replace them myself?

Any thoughts?

That sucks. But the sights aren't generally in need of solvent. Next time just use compressed air.

Repainting sights is easy if they're in a divot.
Get some model paint and some clear nail polish.
Degrease the sights REALLY WELL & let dry.
Put a dab of paint in the hole.
Let the paint dry and add another dab until the hole is mostly full.
Add the clear stuff until the hole IS full if you want them to be super-easy to wipe off in the future without needing to use a heavy-duty solvent on them.

I never thought of re-painting them myself. Being a carry gun, they get a little grimy. I should of just used a dry Q-tip.

Lint is not stubborn firing residue, you surely didn't need to use a super-solvent.

Sometimes the little dot of white paint falls out, and you replace it. It is annoying, but hardly uncommon. You just helped yours fall out all at once.

You can re-paint any color you like, you know.

For a carry gun I insist on tritium night sights. Usually under $100 and many shops will install them for free if you buy thru the shop.

Being able to see your sights ever time, at any time, is crucial.

Hopefully the OP will tell us which model he has. A casual search seems to indicate that all the P238's and 938's come with tritium sights.

With the variety of models, maybe one doesn't.

I have a P238 without the tritium sights. It's a fairly early one which originally had the round coil spring that tended to get crunched over time (I have replaced it with a new flat spring).
Possibly Sig decided to put tritium sights on the ones they made after they "uprated" the model, I don't know. I just know that they did atleast at one time make them sans nightsights.

Mine is the "base model" nitron. It's a few years old. Has the flat spring. No night sights. I certainly wouldn't mind the upgrade, but I can't justify spending $100 right now when life is making me spend my money on more basic needs...

I'd talk to Sig about it. I believe the older ones had a safety recall anyway. You can check website for serial #'s recalled. It's a free fix & may do your sight for you too
