9 MM striker fired

First, I'm going to chuckle at "ambi controls" and everyone recommending a Glock. They don't even have single side controls!

9mm loaded with a decent jacketed hollow point is an effective SD round. Lots of handguns chambered for it. Finding one that fits your hands and points well for you will trump many other factors.

Bobson - Oh whoops. Missed the ambi controls requirement and recommended a G17. I guess the OP missed that requirement too, since he listed the same gun as a pistol he has (or at least had) in consideration.

:what: Of course the Glock has ambidextrous capable controls, three of them in fact. Those controls are the magazine catch, slide stop lever, and trigger. All three can be operated with either hand. With the right hand the thumb operates the magazine catch and slide stop and the index finger operates the trigger. With the left hand the index finger operates all three controls.;)

The Gen4 Glocks have ambi mag releases. So I recommend a Gen4 Glock 19 with a Glock 17 magazine.

No worries about the slide stop lever. You only need to operate it for double feeds, which are quite rare with newer Glocks. In that case I use a finger from my support hand to lift thee stop lever while racking open.

if you have a dd214,you can get glocks at police price from glock distributors.

Could you elaborate on that a bit? Are you saying that veterans get the police price?

(I haven't looked at mine in many years, but I think the DD214 was what I received when I separated from service.)

Just being a vet doesn't qualify me. Sigh. I'm no longer a reservist, not retired etc. My DD214 won't help. :(

I have a son who's a State Trooper, and two nephews who are fire fighters, and I said (to myself) maybe I could get them to get one for me -- but then I looked up "Straw Purchase" and see there's a new ruling on that topic shown on Wikipedia. The part underlined is what I didn't understand:

In July 2014, in the trial of Abramski v. United States (No.12-1493), the United States Supreme Court held that a straw purchaser can be convicted under Title 18 U.S.C. §922(a)(6) for making false statements regarding “any fact material to the lawfulness of the sale” of a firearm, regardless of whether or not the true buyer could have purchased the firearm themselves.

I missed THAT ruling when it came out -- or simply didn't pay proper attention. I'll have to check to see if Wiki has it right.

I'm a little late to the conversation, but here is my 2 cents. My first pistol purchase was an SR9. Great gun, I liked it a lot. Shot well, handled well, did just about everything pretty dang well. However, later down the road I just got bored with it and sold it to fund a CZ75. I am very happy with that decision. The 75 is a classic, internationally respected firearm, that I will appreciate forever. It is obvioisly heavier than the Ruger, but neither is the type fo gun most of us are gonna carry regularly anyhow.

Walt, I'm posting from a phone, so I can't quote properly, but two things come to mind: (1) contact your local blue label distributor to see if your dd214 gets you in ; & (2) there are threads here & on TFL about Abramski. Yes, it's a straw purchase even when neither party is a prohibited person.

For what it is worth ( I dislike striker fired So I am out ) A good friend of mine had a FN 9 he loved it for a long long time then traded it off for a revolver .. His one and only beef was it would throw the brass on top of him . AND thus ends my input ... Oh I do have the FNP 45 love it 15 rounds

That's sad -- as a gunsmith (or a savvy owner) could have tweaked the ejector a bit (or got a new one) to make it throw the brass somewhere else.

I have owner an SR9c for over 3 years now. I have probably 2-3 thousand rounds through it with no issues. Cheap target ammo, and the past year my reloads. It's a good value and rock solid.

Though I can't recommend one because I have zero personal experience with one, I will likely purchase a Canik TP9SA within the next couple weeks. It's suppose to have a wonderful trigger. The price is right too, at $329 NIB.
