Hard to go wrong with the SR9 or 9c. Accurate with a great trigger and at a pretty good price new you don't take the risk of used.

I've had really good ownership experiences with the SR9 and SR9c - either would be a good choice if you naturally point a 1911 well (e.g. strength grip). I have come to learn that I naturally point with more of a fencer's grip (e.g. precision grip - SAA revolvers point for me like The Finger of The Maker Hisself), so I'm a Glock guy and personally would seek out a used Glock deal.

It all comes down to what you point best. If you're not a Glock kind of guy, the SR9/9c is a Best Buy.

In that price range a sr9c is gonna be hard to beat for a new striker fired 9mm . The sr9c might very well be the best of the sr series, however I love my sr45

Shield. I just posted in another thread regarding pretty much the same topic, so I'm not going to repeat myself. I will say, from the XDS (had it in .45), Nano/Solo (just sold), and the Shield, the stock trigger on the Shield is much better than all the others mentioned. And I plan on doing the Apex Trigger as soon as possible, to make it even better.

I like the SR9 trigger. The SV9 S&W trigger stacks a bit before release. Only my impressions. Try them both if the dealer has them. Dry fire, I mean. Ask first, some dealers don't like customers dry firing.

hard and fast price limits are silly.

if you got a $450 shot (uised, private party sale) at a $900 gun (retail price) even if it is a hammer model, you'd better grab it. :) Then sell it for $600, repeat as desired/possible until you get what you want (and have none of your own money tied up in it.

Used Glock. For all the reasons that have inspired the sale of over 5M Glocks. ;)

Did not see a FNS 9 mentioned. I just picked one up for under $400 with NS and 3 mags. I am being converted from Glocks. Still like my 19 and 23 but the grip and ergos of the the FNS are winning me over. It has been cold here so I only have one mag through it but it is worth looking at.

This was initially going to be a range pistol, but after seeing the SR9c I would really like to carry something besides my PF9 too. With the 17 round mag, it fits both bills...

I have always stayed away from Glocks and XDs, because aesthetics are important too and for me, they look like Lego guns  (I hate the blocky look), just my opinion. The FNs are over 600$ where ever I look.

Or you could shop around and go retro. Astra 600. .........

It'll go over your $400 mark but if asthetics are important have you seen the talo DLC finish SR9c.

aesthetics are important to most people I think (ie: most would probably agree that hipoints are pretty dang ugly looking). I like the talo dlc better but not enough to pay more.

Been shooting a lot of years & have always been a big fan of S&W. They have great C.S.& produce soom fine handguns! You have a few pistols to choose from. The M&P. Shield, my favorite the S.D. pistols, (A great deal! ) or a used S&W auto or Rov.! Made in America! There are some others mentioned, but I would look at S&W.! JMO.

I own a S&W SD9VE and I think it looks great and after 300 rounds it has proven to be reliable and very accurate as well. You can get one for less than $400 and have money left over for a holster or a little cache of ammo.
