I thought that the original purpose of the M1 carbine and cartridge was to replace the 1911 pistol and 45 ACP cartridge being used by support troops. The carbine and cartridge offered more power and longer range than the 1911 and 45 ACP. The carbine and cartridge were not meant to replace a...
Well, sort of.
By 1900 Browning and Winchester had parted ways in a dispute over selling the right to a design versus paying royalties for use of a design.
When detail design of the Models 1911 SL and 1912 started Browning was out of the picture at Winchester. However, the core designs of both...
I always found it strange that Winchester could develop the Model 12 , one of the great pump action shotguns, and in the same time period develop the Model 1911 SL semi auto shotgun. The 1911 SL certainly had some questionable design features.
At one time I owned a 1911 SL. It was a fun gun to...
I came across this quick review of some old Winchester slide action shotguns. I thought it may be of interest to slide action shotgun action fans.
Shown and briefly discussed are a Model 1893, a Model 1897, and a 20 ga. Model 12, a heavy duck Model 12, and a Model 42.

I came across this gunsmith video (Mark Novak) about the Winchester Model 42 today. While this thread is several months old, the video may still be of interest to model 42 owners and fans.

I find the cartridge specific books published by Loadbooks to be quick handy references for a specific cartridge. I have them for each of the cartridges that I reload for along with the normal multi-cartridge reference books. (Hornady, Siearra, Speer, Lyman, etc.)

Anschutz appears to catalog at least one new 22 Hornet rifle. I don't know if it's really available or not.

Congratulations on the Winchester model 42. Those are very nice shotguns.
The closest I ever got to a owning a model 42 was a Remington 870 Wingmaster 410 skeet model. It was a very nice gun. It shot and functioned wonderfully. It just was not quite as slick or elegant as the model 42.
When I needed a shim to correctly time the barrel nut for passage of the gas tube and to obtain in spec torque, I cut the shim to get around the barrel index pin.

I took it that the OP was referring to this.

A couple of decades ago, my job required that I live somewhere for a year or two and then move somewhere else. That meant that I was moving from apartment to apartment. Luckily in...
Mark_Mark said "except the C98, what other gun shoots 30 Mauser?"
From a quick look, there doesn't appear to be much available other than C96 Mausers. It seems the other somewhat common gun is the Astra 900, basically a Spanish sort of copy of the Mauser C96. There is the rare and expensive...
I'd buy a gun that shoots 30 Mauser, but that's me.
I think this is what you wanted.

The Lee dies work fine for me.
FYI, Starline is now listing 30 Luger brass "buy now".
My 30 Luger is not a Luger, so my loading experience with the 30 Luger cartridge is probably not typical.
My dies are Lee. That's what was available when I needed dies, so that's what I bought. They have worked fine for me.
My brass is Starline.
I have two molds for casting bullets for my 327...
It sounds like, if an individual wants a reasonably useable and accurate load with cast bullets and black powder that the proper black powder bullet lube should be used.
Ever had problems with factory ammo?
I can't recall ever having problems with factory ammo. May be because 90% of the ammo I shoot is ammo that I loaded. Even with rimfire ammo, I've never had serious problems. A misfire here and there, but nothing serious. I guess I'm just lucky.
