Western Elk Hunting - advice for a flat lander

An alternative to high mountain elk can be found in the Olympic Mountains here in Washington. The ranges are short, the altitude is low, the hunting is not easy and the elk are big. Did I mention the Olympic Mountains are a rain forest? You might get a little wet. Bring good peep sights on a...

Worst lines you've heard from gun sellers?

At Sportsman's Warehouse: Clerk: It's a great gun, you can hit a penny with it at 1,000 yards. Customer: Yeah I read that on the internet! Some guy on that one site did it. Really cool. How is it so accurate? Clerk: It's 'cause the .338 La-pew-ya bullet doesn't stabilize until 300 meters...

    Gun oil of choice?

Ribbet Every steel object I've put Frog Lube on has never rusted or squeaked or shown undue wear. I have doubts about its cleaning ability, so I turn to dedicated stuff (Mpro7, KG12) when scrubbing is needed. My sole gripe: after Frog Lube sits for a few months, it smells like I've stored the...

WA 1594 - The next steps in the fight

Anyone in Washington knows Tim Eyeman. Those who don't, well, the guy is an initiative-writing machine. Quite a few of his initiatives have passed voters, but not the court, because the initiative contained more than one purpose. I695 was one such measure that chopped vehicle tab fees and...

    Copper fouling cleaner.

KG12 @ MidwayUSA, it's a non-ammonia copper killer that works better than Sweet's and won't gas anyone in the same room. Being ammonia-free also means it doesn't etch steel if you leave it in the bore for too long.

CDNN Wont Ship AR Upper to WA state... What Gives?

An auto BCG does not make a firearm full-auto; the trigger group would need alteration for that. You're not the only one, though. Using a little Google-Fu, I've found this question going back to 2005 at least. It involves an ATF letter and RCW 9.41.220 and a particularly dim-witted individual...

Washington State I-594 is Firearm Registration

Local mish-mash Plenty of the Letters to the Editor in my local paper are waxing eloquent about 594's virtues. It's kind of obvious none of them have read the bill. Several stated no additional charges for BG checks would occur. Several others stated no registry would be set up under 594 and...

Washington State I-594 is Firearm Registration

I've seen a lot more "No on 594" signs popping up lately. The "Yes 591/No 594" sticker suddenly appeared at campus in the last week. Four or five were on faculty cars. Even more telling, I've yet to see a single pro-594 sticker or sign around town.

    Where are the .257 Roberts?

Savage makes several rifles in .257 Roberts. Their custom shop can chamber any rifle they make in that caliber, too, and for not much more than an off-the-shelf rifle.

My Deal of a Lifetime: What was YOURS?

Not mine, but a very dear friend who got me started in handloading nabbed a Ruger Blackhawk in .30 Carbine for $50 at the last gun show. Loudest pistol I've ever met! Darn accurate, too.

How do you keep track of times brass has been fired?

My brass goes into containers sorted by caliber. On the lid is a 3x5" card with four lines of info: maker, times reloaded, caliber, number remaining. At a glance, I can tell you that my Starline .45 Colt brass has been reloaded five times and I'm short four cases (96 left). In my gun binder...

I need an affordable plastic storage bin for my rifles.

If you've got a circular saw and a drill, your problems are already solved. Make a plywood box that fits exactly under the bed and use old carpet remnants as padding so the rifles aren't resting on something hard. If you're handy, you could probably knock one out in an afternoon.

Long range limits of the .223 as varmint round?

1:9 should stabilize anything up to a 75gr round. Note I say should stabilize; there are bullets that tend to run long for their weight (Nosler, among others). The best, and really only thing you can do is to buy one box each of various varmint loads and see what your rifle likes. Then pass the...
