    Flashlights For Protection

Same. I believe that one should always try to get away from an attacker before escalating force, and a bright flashlight is a great tool for that. Pair it with a good can of pepper spray, and you've got yourself a winning non lethal SD combo.

    Flashlights For Protection

I don't currently, but that's a good idea. The most armament I've ever carried is my multitool, as I don't have a carry license and just don't feel comfortable packing heat everywhere I go. The multitool has a blade, but it's folding, non-assisted, and very slow to deploy. It is NOT a fighting...

    New .44 AutoMag production

More than I'd spend on a gun, but very nice. When I was a kid, I thought that the Automag was the coolest thing ever. As a kid whose most powerful weapon was a Red Ryder with a missing forend, such a hand cannon seemed exotic and mysterious.

    Ugliest gun you've ever loved

There are some beautiful guns out there, but there are also some that, um...are not. Some are old designs that were limited by available technology, some are misguided attempts at being "futuristic", and others are just plain ugly. What is your favorite ugly gun? Mine would have to be the...

    45/45acp Redhawk

The Redhawk frame is very strong. I believe it can handle +P loads with no trouble. HOWEVER, Ruger puts that warning in to say "If you hotrod your gun and blow your hand off, it's not our fault." They know that their guns are popular for shooting nuke handloads, but they have to include warnings...

    Barrel shortening and weight reduction

I took my Savage Axis .30-06 down to 18 inches from 22 inches and recrowned it by hand. It is working pretty well for me, and I've not noticed any accuracy issues. I used the Brownell's hand cutters, and the important thing is to keep the whole system well-oiled. I used Viper's Venom cutting...

    Bigger caliber???

Ruger makes the Mini-30 (7.62x39) and a Mini in 300 BLK. They also used to make a 6.8 SPC Mini. Some guy also made a .450 Bushmaster Mini, but it was a custom job and I don't think he made any more.

    Irrational Dislike

Anything in the 6mm to 7mm family. For my purposes (mostly plinking and busting pop cans) they don't do anything a .223, .308 or .30-06 doesn't at a lower price point. Also, I just don't like the numbers 6 and 7. Not sure why, but I've always had a disdain for them.

    Budget vs expensive hunting guns?

^ Really, a Red Ryder should be sufficient if the shooter does his part.:D

    Budget vs expensive hunting guns?

I'm not much of a hunter, but I am a huge tinkerer. I like to use cheap guns as bases for projects. I recently bought myself a Savage Axis Hardwood in .30-06, stripped and restained/refinished the stock, cut the barrel to 18 inches, and recrowned it by hand. It's a great woods rifle. It's...

    Tell Me What You Think

I've never been much of an AR guy, but that rifle might make me reconsider...

How would you rate the ruggedness of a Mini-14/30 to an AK or an AR?

That smells like BS to me. I'm not a great shot, but I can hit targets that are significantly smaller than an adult male at that range. If I can bust a flower pot at 100 with mine, I would certainly expect that the same gun could hit a man at 70. Hell, I could probably whip up some unholy...

How would you rate the ruggedness of a Mini-14/30 to an AK or an AR?

Although I've never personally used one, I've heard that Mini-30s have trouble with steel-case ammo. Based on what I know, I would probably buy an AK before a Mini-30 (I've never used an AK either, though). However, I do have a Mini-14 and find it to be very reliable. The only trouble I ever...

Something Else To Think About When Choosing Your Self Defense Ammunition

Ah, you guys and your puny handgun cartridges! If you want to see some impressive muzzle flash (and feel one hell of a shockwave), try an Encore pistol with a 12 inch barrel in .30-06. Even if you miss the target, the fire blast should take care of it. The one I handled was braked, and would...

Saturday 3-10-18, Justice Dept Just Made Next Move to BAN Bump Stocks

I'm not thrilled about it, but I'm not surprised, either. Frankly, I'm more surprised that they lasted as long as they did.

    "Knockdown Power"

H I wonder if I could get that in an Encore. Y'know, for carry.

    "Knockdown Power"

Ah, the mythical "stoppn powuh". In my neck of the woods, people practically live by that phrase. "What gun should I carry?" ".45 because of stopping power." "Which rifle should I use for hunting?" ".30-06. Anything less doesn't have enough knockdown power." The truth is that very few (if...

Slide lubes Using a chainsaw lube?

It would probably work, but chainsaw oil tends to gunk up over time. I use a chainsaw for work from time to time, and it is absolutely filthy. I can't even touch the darn thing without getting grease/dirt/whatever all over my hand.

Minimize the arsenal. Maximize the budget.

I'd probably pick a Mini 14, a PTR91/FAL/Other-.308-battle-rifle, a Ruger 9mm carbine, and a Super Redhawk .454 Casull revolver. The Mini would be a good all-arounder. It could serve as anything from a combat rifle (God forbid) to a plinker. The .308 battle rifle would mostly be just for fun...

If you could build from scratch

I would build a gun in the style of Ruger's old .44 autoloader, but in a more powerful chambering. How neat would a .500 Magnum or .480 Ruger self-loader be?
