Savage Mk 1 SVT--convert to repeater?

I have a Savage Mk 1 SVT (in .22), which came as a single-shot. It's the one with the ugly plastic stock and the Williams front & rear aperture sights. On the underside where the magazine well would be, there's a blank cover plate which has a spacer block to fill up the mag well that's molded...

    Review: Baikal IZH-60

Review and Notes on the Baikal IZH-60 (MP-60) Air Rifle This is a low-velocity (<500 ft/sec) target rifle, spring-piston powered and configured as a side-cocker. *** Single-shot vs repeater My other air rifle is a Daisy 953, and it's convertible to function as either a single-shot or a...

    chisel grind: right- or left-handed?

Just a quick question about chisel-ground blades. It seems to me that if the grind is on the right side, it would favor a right-handed user; left side grind for southpaws. I thought of this when looking at the Razel on CRKT's site--they're all ground on the left side. Comments? Heron

    New machete -- field report

I'd been shopping for a machete to take down some stuff (a tree, actually) that was close enough to my cement-block garage that I might hit it, and didn't want to ruin my Estwing hatchet, and because I wanted something with a bit more reach. It took me more than a few hours of searching...

    "Four Rules" for knives?

The "Four Rules" for firearms use are all over the place here, but has anyone done something similar for the use of knives and other edged/pointed tools? If they have, I've never seen it. I could start with a couple: 1) Keep it sharp 2) BEFORE putting the blade in motion, THINK of where...

    Crossbow scope question

A friend of mine has a Twin-bow crossbow -- fascinating piece of work, and very nice to shoot. He's currently got a BSA red-dot on it and while we were shooting, the sight failed to adjust for windage, so he wants to replace it. The crossbow is equipped with a scope rail. I suggested he look...

    knife grip issue, need suggestions

I'm brand-new to the world of decent folding knives. I just got two Kershaws; a Leek and a Scallion. I chose those after looking at hundreds of knives on the web. The Leek has the "stone-washed" finish all over, and it's really beautiful, but -- it's really slippery. I want to do something to...

    Disassembly of Hi-Point magazines

I have a Hi-Point 995TS, and I'm greatly enjoying it, but I haven't figured out how to disassemble the mags for cleaning. All my other rifle/pistol mags have some fairly obvious button on the floor plate that you push in and then slide the plate off. No such feature with these. Any clues?

    Dealer cost/markup on new guns

Okay, I sent in my entry for the NRA-ILA contest, and the Grand prize is 19 guns, which I selected from a list. Now, supposing I won this instant armory, I really have no desire for most of the ones I checked; I just checked off 19 items for the purpose of the contest. So, I'm guessing...

    Ammo Direct -- gone?

I placed an internet order with AmmoDirect two months ago, haven't heard a peep -- and now their website is unavailable. Does anyone know if they went out of business? I'd like to try getting them on the phone, but don't have their number (which is --or was --on their website). :banghead...

    Backstop

It's been a hassle for me replacing the things I use as backstops in my backyard range. I first started out using some 1 1/4" plywood panels I found, which worked okay for a while just shooting .22. I didn't care about the material, but behind the backstop is an embankment reinforced with...

    What cartridge was this?

I saw a classic movie the other night: "The Day of the Jackal," in which an assassin has a custom-built sniper rifle made for him -- it probably weighed about two pounds, but I'm curious about the ammunition. He was shown handling some cartridges, and they were small, but necked-down, I'd guess...

    Mexican crime guns

I don't know if this has been posted here before; a quick search didn't find it. http://www.factcheck.org/politics/counting_mexicos_guns.html here's the text -- sources are included after the article, but not with the pasted text quoted below. Seems to me that we have more non-information...

    Handgun as club

We've all heard of the practice of "pistol-whipping." I'm just wondering how -- and how badly -- you'd damage a handgun (auto or revolver) by using it to beat someone with.

    Enlightening article

    Multiple storage locations

It occurred to me that it may be good idea to keep some portions of your weapons and ammo stocks in different locations within your house. Say there was a fire that damages a portion of your house, but not all of it. If all your weapons and ammo were in the same place -- the part that burned --...
