Great show on the History Channel about this. The Spartans were able to deal so effectively with the Persians, the show said, because they were so heavily armored compared to their lightly armored opponents.

The Spartans wore full armor and helmet but "300" discarded that because this will look better. They can also now have them jumping and stabbing and they couldn't do that in their armor - plus they fought in a phalanx formation that was very tight and didn't need to move much. There was also 1000 soldiers from Thespia who stayed with them at the end but I'm sure that won't be in there either. Many historical facts will be wrong but I'm sure it'll be a great movie. In Sin City they shot for 30 seconds from a standard Uzi mag where I get about 3 seconds worth, but I love the movie anyway!

Spoilers!!!

Actualy, there are 1,000 Thespians.

While obviously this movie is not totaly true to history, and it is heavily stylized, I was very pleased with some of the details it included. The scene where the Spartans and Thespians meet up is one of the handfull of scenes in the movie you get to laugh at.

Go see it, very good.

I saw it on Tuesday (some sort of pre-release screening) and liked it a lot. It's definitely worth seeing IMO. About the Spartans' clothes (or lack thereof), the fact that they were so ripped seemed to differentiate them from the other Greeks who weren't real soldiers, and just made them look more like bad-asses :D .

As for them saying "come and get them" instead of "molon labe," IMO, it'd be kinda goofy if, in a movie that's entirely in english, they had one line in greek that only a couple (if any) people in the theater would understand. "Come and get them" gets the point across just fine.

The History Channel special specifically said that they would have been wearing relatively heavy armor, so they stripped them down for the graphic novel and movie.

The whole point is the Spartan leader was laconic and terse. Think of a primal John Wayne. He didn't need to scream or prance around wearing oils. He answered the bombastic threats of the Persians with understated, wry comments. Among these was "molon labe." It's the equivalent of General McAuliffe's "Nuts." Imagine a version of the Battle of the Bulge filmed by Michael Bay featuring a half naked McAuliffe and a hyper-muscled Patton screaming war cries at mutant Germans.

Cosmoline, have you been reading my WWII fan-fic?:p

For those of you wanting an accurate rendition, read the book "Gates of Fire" by Steven Pressfield(sp?). 300 is what used to be called a "historical romance". No, not romance like those paperbacks that your mother reads with the Fabio look-alike on the cover, but the Romantic movement of the 19th Century. They take historical evens and figures and idealizes/embellishes them, and while some of the technical facts are lost but the story becomes more entertaining and teaches valuable lessons about ideals and morals. These were popular for the same reasons that the Greek mythology was popular.

This movie shouldn't be viewed as a historical film, but rather a modern myth.

Um, Thebans. The people who fought alongside the Spartans were from Thebes.

"Thespians" are actors, after a man named Thespis from ancient Greek theatre.

haha

I was waiting for someone to say that brian/happy bob.

Thanks to everyone ordering decals. It has been a good day. :)

"No, they were indeed Thespians.

All right I am confused now.

IIRC, the movie barely acknowledges the Thespians, almost restricting the
non-Spartiate Greeks to the Arcadians (Tegeans & Matineans).

I feel badly for the omission of Dienekes, and the mangling of the Ephors
(on top of the confusion with Delphic Oracle priests). I was bothered by
the dark-skinned (!!) Persians, the light skinned (!!) Spartans, and most of
all by the un-laconic yelling by the King of the Laconians.

But yes, the movie was visually stunning. My wife and I enjoyed it.
The most stylish use of CGI in a live action film I've seen yet.

Oh, and... nice decals you have for sale there. :)

Thank you, Sir. I'll be practicing.

Oh, and I can't make it to the movie tonight, but I plan to see it tomorrow afternoon. Should be terrific.

I will make these decals next haha

"Δεν βρέθηκαν λέξεις." :neener:

I guess it turned into a little bit of both. The decals have a lot to do with the movie. and vice versa.

So buy my decals, I am going to see 300 right now. :) Keep the orders coming guys.

Who knows what they'll be watching in a stylized fashion in 2300 years?

Maybe something like this:

My short and simple review of 300.

I personally loved the movie! It is fantastic COMIC BOOK telling of an historic battle. If you go into it expecting a 100 percent accurate telling of The Battle of Thermopylae you may be disappointed. It has its historical accuracies and inaccuracies but is a thrilling movie! If you want something that is probably much more historically accurate I recommend the History Channel special that ran last night. It think was called Last Stand of the 300. It was a very good show.
