007 and his Walther PPK

I have not always bought guns etc for the most objective reasons but I sure haven't paid a premium for a gun just because it used to belong to some foreigner and an enemy alien at that.
 
I found the PPK to be very reliable and have carried it as my off duty gun for an 18 month period. I also had a PP and I found the PPK was more comfortable to shoot because of the more rounded grips against the web of my hand. Both were reliable and more accurate than expected. My PPK is a German pre-war and the PP was a French made gun.

I would have bet my life on either one, but preferred the PPK.

I'm fortunate to own a .22LR and .380 acp PPK/S and a pre-war PPK 7.65 mm that I inherited from my FIL 32 years ago. The PPK/S' I've had around 40+ years. All three are super reliable, accurate and fit my smaller hand size. I like them A LOT! Along with the PPK I have the German military holster (serial # inked inside) but there are NO Nazi or military markings on the pistol. I also have the papers from when it was brought into the US after the war. I've thought about having the PPK re-blued; would this be a mistake?

You will spend $300 to turn an $800 Gun into a $400 gun.

It’s an early gun with the 90 degree safety. It’s already desirable.

(it could be worth more, I just grabbed a price based on one picture of condition)

I carried my '67 vintage PPK for years. Reliable only with hot loads. Stovepipes with range loads. I'm hard on grips and broke the originals while tightening after cleaning. Replace with some wood Hogues. Much more comfortable to shoot. It's a range toy now, but still fun to shoot.

About same size and weight: the PPS is so reliable with any 9 mm in its 9 round capacity that I finally found a home for that 35 year old Supervel hollow point 100 grain ammo that goes almost 1300 fps out of the PPS . I have yet to find a BHP that can eat it reliable. The PP .32 is very reliable with this hot Geco cupro nickel slick ball. Probably the most reliable and lethal load ever made for.32acp all things considered. That .32 Geco ball is about a perfect slaughter gun cartridge, all the way up to steers :)

tell me more about this round and is is still in production? I've really come to like the .32acp Fiocchi FMJ round for my Walther PP and Beretta M81.
 
The Fiocchi FMJ is the best you can still buy IMHO and the difference in velocity between that and the 60s-70s Geco pictured is about 100 fps out of a PP . Just check Notes from 5 years ago on a Chronograph at 15 feet : Geco Cupro Nickel Ball= 974 FPS +- 25 fps , Fiocchi Ball = 890 Fps , both out of the Walther PP pictured. Notice mine has German Forestry Ranger Markings ? Perfect for putiing everything up to moose out of their suffering IMHO :)
Now the PPS is about the Best available EDC IMHO that can be purchased. But that is a cracker barrel argument and liable to get bar fights on that one :) Personally I have not seen a more or as reliable gun. Those grips BTW help secure the one possible defect in an M1 Walther PPS; the backstrap "safety lock " feature those rubber granules "grips" should strengthen it and pretty much insure that replaceable back strap ain't going anywhere :)

I have two of the FEG's:

a PP copy in 32acp with an aluminum frame

a PPK copy in 380acp with a steel frame

They are both reliable. They both hit where you aim at.

The PP is a joy to shoot. It points easily and has a nice balance.

The PPK is okay. It has a smaller grip and more recoil, but it doesn't hurt my hand to shoot it or anything like that.

I was one of the chumps that bought the PPS 9mm when they were going for $600. my only gripe and the only reason I sold it off was the back strap that disables the gun.
 
all tho it is extremely unlikely scenario and they do give you two or three back straps with the gun it IS a possible defect . Thats why I got those kevlar tape covered with rubber granules "grips that actually wrap the backstrap tight to the rest of the grip , and of course cushion the hollow plastic besides being grippy .
 
i have a Smith and Wesson PPK which is different but the same idea, but stainless, .380, and US import sized, despite being US made.

I really like it, its very reliable, very accurate, and fun. Its heavy, and recoil is harsh.
If you ever get one, especially in .380, which is much easier to find in the US anyway, handloading is a big improvement. Loading 95 grain bullets to 750fps makes it much more fun, and hurts far less than the 100 grain at 900+ of common commercial loads. I would go a little lower but my equipment can't meter smaller than that. Handloading in general is the way to go if you don't, but don't start now! either way, with handloading i can shoot a .380 with almost .22lr recoil, at almost .22lr price... key work "almost", around 11c/round.

FWIW i bought this as a nice carry pistol. For those who want a DA/SA, steel frame, safety, compact, its about the only option in a new US made model. Steel frames hold up really well. If looking for one, I would consider the FEG copies, the APK (have one, love it), SMC-380, and the much more common, inexpensive even now, stranger looking but very good PA-63... which is in 9mm makarov.
 
while I have no aversion to the .380acp, I have no use for it in a blowback gun.
 
According to Internet Movie Firearms Database IMFDb, while scripted James Bond and Felix Letter were issued PPKs by their cinematic intelligence agencies in DR NO, the studio armourer issued PPs to Sean Connery and Jack Lord because PPKs looked too small in their hands.
In the later films, when a PPK was called for, a PPK was used.

I've seen a publicity pic of Dalton with a PP. I don't know if that's what he actually used in the movie but I think I've seen at least once movie scene where Dalton is holding a PP.
 
How can you tell? I just watched Dr. No and I can't tell the whether the pistol Connery was handed was a PP or a PPK. The only difference between them was a fractional difference in size, no? I can't tell 'em apart in that movie. So was it info in the book? Incidentally my (occasional) carry piece is an early S&W licensee (before they extended the beavertail) and it has been 100% with every hollowpoint I've tried in it.
 
PPand PPK/s has a visible back strap with flat panel stocks. PPK has a wrap around set stocks with no visible back strap.
