Took down my 10/22 for the first time a few weeks ago. Gave it a thorough cleaning, which included stripping the bolt completely. Now the bolt won't lock into an open position.

What am I missing? Thanks.

Pictures of the trigger group and bolt may help. I'm guessing the bolt was somehow incorrectly reassembled.

Actually, I didn't exactly strip the bolt completely. I removed the extractor and extractor spring and plunger. That's about it as for the bolt.

If you're talking about the last shot holding the bolt open, the 10/22 won't do that.

There is a lever by the trigger group that will hold the bolt open for cleaning or range purposes, but it's a manual hold open.

What Anmut said. There is a cool little kit available from Volquartsen that I think will change that. It isn't really necessary but a fun little installation. It's been so long since I shot that rifle I've forgotten if the bolt is held open or not now.

Yeah, the bolt doesn't hold open after the last shot from the magazine. I figured you meant the bolt latch by the magazine release wasn't working anymore.....

okay, got it. It's been a while since I shot it and I thought that the release in front of the trigger guard was a bolt release. Guess it's working fine.

Next question: which end of the barrel does the bullet shoot out of? ;)

I didn't think the bolt was supposed to lock back after the last shot, mine never did. that is the only fault my rifle has. I have often wondered why Ruger built it that way.

Probably because it's cheaper to make without a bolt hold-open device for the last shot. Too bad, really, because said feature is very handy to have on any semi-auto firearm.

The 10/22 should have that feature, slamming the firing pin into the breech face is never great for it. But whatever - it works!

It doesn't hit the breech face. The 10/22 has a firing pin to stop that prevents that. No problem dry firing.
