Hey all - so I'm picking up a 10/22 very soon in some configuration. Looking at the factory combo with scope here :
http://www.cabelas.com/product/ruger-reg-10-22-reg-22lr-semiautomatic-rimfire-rifle-with-3-9x40-scope-combo/2185896.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fsemiautomatic-rimfire-rifles%2Fruger%2F_%2FN-1114868%2B1000004535%2FNe-1000004535%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_104800680%3FWTz_st%3DGuidedNav%26WTz_stype%3DGNU

I know this is not a top of the line scope, so if I just want to take it off down the road and upgrade later will there be any challenges? Just looking at all of the configurations I'm kind of thinking why not go with the scope combo for now since it's cheaper than the base model without anything additional?

That's good to go.... and change out later if needed with out any differences than adding/changing the non scoped base model.

Personally, I think a 40mm is too big/heavy and prefer 2-7 or 3-9 varible in the 28-32mm lens range and, imo, there a lot of good choices in the $50 to $100 and no reason to go above $150.

But others wouldnt think of anything less than the size that's on there now and prefer a 5-15 x50mm.... others will say that a fixed 3x or 4x is perfect.

Some will say anything less than a $250 scope isn't worth having.

Bottom line.... shoot it and then decide.

$250 with a cheap BSA scope isn't a bad deal for an entry level .22 auto carbine.

I don't think I'd ever by the basic 10/22 carbine again though except as a build platform.
If it was me I'd spend a little more up front, $300-350, pick up a 10/22 Deluxe or LVT and decide on the scope you want. Deluxe's come with iron sights, LVT's do NOT.
Check out the Ruger website under dealer exclusives or search online, Sportsmans-Depot online has a good selection.

I agree with danez71: the 40 mm. objective lens looks too big on the Ruger 10/22. I would go with something slightly smaller in size. On my 10/22 I just wanted a little magnification because I knew the rifle was more accurate than I could shoot it with iron sights. Found an old Weaver K2.5 that has been just the ticket for the kind of plinking that I like to do.
