10mm 1911: Kimber or Dan Wesson Razorback?

I'm considering switching my 10mm gun from a Glock 20 to a 1911 pattern gun. I've always had a thing for the 1911 and just yesterday picked up a Kimber Series 1 Classic Custom Target.

The best prices that I have found for both guns are below, they include shipping and FFL transfer fees:

Kimber 10mm = $850 Out the door

DW Razorback 10mm = $790 OTD



Which would you get and why?

Who has what and have you been happy with it?

I have been VERY happy with my Dan Wesson Patriot 10mm. It has been an excellent performer. I have also been very pleased with the way Dan Wesson treats their customers. From my experience they have been very good at making sure their customers are 100% satisfied. They also seem quite interested in hearing what shooters want and respond accordingly. Hopefully I'll be shooting a DW bobtail Commander 10mm in a couple months!

I have zero experience with any kind of Kimber so I can't speak to their 1911 10mm.

How much did you pay for that particular gun?

Did yours have any teething problems?

I passed on the "limited edition" Razorbacks, and don't regret it one bit. The single example of those I've personally held and examined removed any doubts I might have entertained.

Later, I bought the Kimber Stainless Target II in 10mm, and have found it to be an excellent pistol. I think the Kimber is everthing the Dan Wesson wants to be.

I'd be inclined to hunt down a pre-Series II Kimber in .40 S&W and have it converted to 10mm. Total cost would be about the same as the new 10mm Kimber is, without the problems folks have seen with the Series II bits or on-again, off-again QC.

I've found a Pre-Series II .40S&W Stainless Custom for $760 out the door.

Are the slide the same on the .40 and the 10mm guns, or did Kimber beef them up on the 10mm's?

Last I checked the guns are identical except for the chamber dimensions & magazines. .40 S&W 1911s are essentially just de-tuned 10mm 1911s.

The only 10mm 1911 with a deliberately heavier slide that I know of is the Delta Elite, and the weight gain is small enough that there is some doubt that it was even intentional.

I have a Delta Elite and I think the slide is nothing more than a 38 Super with the breech face slightly enlarged, so the weight increase over the 45 ACP slide is minimal. Just saw a Kimber series II in 10mm at the local gunshop, they want $899.

I'm not sure, but I seem to recall the .40S&W Kimbers use a conventional barrel, while my Target II has a ramped barrel.

Brech-face dimensions should be identical.

I don't think so. All their .40 guns in the current catalog are listed as ramped. If true, it would make absolutely no sense... the .40 needs a ramped barrel alot more than the 10mm does, since the .40 has the weaker case of the two but runs at near-10mm pressures.

I have a Dan Wesson Pointman Major in 10mm. It is by far,my favorite pistol...and I have had Glock 23, and a Sig P220.
I am very happy with my DW, and I have never seen a company that is as easy, and fun to deal with as DW. They actually ask their customers what they want..and then they deliver. I would look for Dan Wesson to become one of the major players in the 1911 world before too much longer.
Mine is an absolute tack driver, and feeds any type of hollow point ammo I throw at it 100% of the time. The trigger is amazing, and weighs in at about 3.75#'s.
Great pistols IMHO!
