Im looking for a 10mm in a 1911 platform like a delta elite. I understand Kimber has made a 10mm and Dan Wesson also makes one. My department allows us to carry a 1911 style gun but it must be a series 80, is anyone making a series 80 in 10mm?

Tom

colt custom shop is making a delta elite or can wait for a new production run sometime this year. But a kimber eclipse series 2 is a match grade. Mine works great but need to smooth feed ramps some.

will the colt or kimber, or this design in general handle the full power loads? Im talkin about the winchester 175gr silvertips that travels at nearly 1300fps

I don't know about the Kimber, but the Colt often didn't. Ask 1911Tuner about this, wherever he is.

The Glock 20 can stand up to that kind of abuse, though will likely put "smiley-face" bulges on the brass if you don't use a fully-supported after-market barrel, which would only run you $100.

The soon-to-be-released Vltor Fortis, a Bren Ten reengineered to take Witness mags, will be at least as strong as the original, which was said to be plenty strong. Their wordpress blog says they can "confidently say" that the baseline model will be under $1,000. They look pretty cool to me, but I'm leary of anything that isn't demonstrably on the market. Beware of vaporware!

Does being California legal satisfy your department's legal folks?

If so, I believe you can get a Cali-legal 10mm from Wilson. There's one at one of my local gun stores (not sure on the Cali legal part) that's a great looking weapon and comes with a 40 cal barrel and other parts needed to shoot 40S&W also, to allow for cheaper practice ammo. But they want over $2800 for it, used . . .

No Im in Illinois, and despite the general anti-gun policies that seem to go hand in hand with living in a large metropolitan area, most of Illinois is basically farm land. In fact the only difference between Illinois, Indiana to the east and Iowa to the west is the Chicago Metro area. The good part is the usually robust economy, even in the bad times, but with a big city comes big city problems. For whatever reason, the powers that be seem to think gun control is the answer. It doesnt help that Chicago has had a lot of high profile shootings involving teenaged gang-bangers, that the media all calls "inocent children" so restrictive gun policies have been the norm here my whole life.

Now that Im thouroghly off topic, the only restriction my department has is the firing pin block found on a series 80 and later 1911 platform. It seems most 1911's are series 80, but there is still a few out there, so I hafta be careful before parting w/ any $$$.

I know a Glock will do what I want it to do, and more than likely that what Il end up with seeing as Ive carried a Glock for 17 years now and trust my life to one, but I was curious and wanted to see whats out there.

BTW does anyone know if the Dan Wesson is Series 80 or 70?

Thanks

Tom

Series-70.

Does it have to be an exact series-80 clone, or can it be a different drop safety? Because if it has to be the same FPB, then you can rule out Kimber and possibly some others.

Jason

If the requirement is for a firing pin safety only the Kimber's Swartz safety is a firing pin safety that differs from the series 80 basically only by virtue of it's activation method. The S80 activates via a lift lever connected to the trigger while the Kimber does the same thing using the grip safety for it's lifting action. So, you could ask if the FPS is the requirement and go with the Kimber if that's the case. I like the DW better than either of them but there is no FPS. The mention of the Colt's not holding up to the power was the first I'd heard of that, I wonder if the new Delta Elite is designed better. Hmm, I wonder if there are problems with the Kimber in that area.

Let me preface this by saying that I love my Dan Wesson 10mm PM7. It's a nice 1911 and it does get carried. For what its worth, I have had no problems with it handling full power 10mm. As others have said, its is definately a series 70.

If I were in your shoes, I would go for the G20. It is hands down the most well rounded firearm that I own, and it just plain works. The only thing that I would suggest is replacing the factory guide rod with a wolff guide rod and a 22 or 24 lbs spring. Also, you may not like it if you have smaller hands.

I shoot double tap ammo through all of my 10mm handguns, and it is loaded like 10mm should be. They recommend replacing the spring with a stronger one for use with full power loads.

They list a 180gr controlled expansion hollow point out of a Glock 20 at 1350fps. http://www.doubletapammo.com/php/catalog/index.php

Good info... I'm planning for a 10MM next... But I don't know if a 1911 is in my budget unless I buy used. I'll be looking towards Glock or the EAA Witness most likely. Do you guys have much info on the EAA's?

glock released the G20 SF, supposely a slimmer G20 for those that don't have large hands.

I've got three 10mm Witness pistols, a full size, a compact and an Elite Match. All three are all steel and well used. I shoot 200gr speer fmjs at 1225, 135gr Nosler JHPs at 1600 AA9 and Power Pistol are the powders to use unless you like weighing each charge of Blue Dot as that stuff doesn't measure for crap.

Edit to add: No problems whatsoever with any of these pistols, shot weekly or more and the most used one is five years old.

I read somewhere that EAA sucks for service but that Tangfolio is a better way to go if there's a problem. Anyway... 1600 whew! That's smokin. I reload but I use a Lyman 1200 DPS3 so it does the measuring for me. All I have to do is check calibration and make sure it reads right before I pull the pan off of the scale. I haven't found a powder it has trouble with yet. I use 7 different powders now between handgun and rifle.

Marty, I grew up in St. Helens.... I live in the Seattle area now though.

I picked up a Glock 29, subcompact 10mm. I was never a fan of Glocks and didnt care much for 10mm, preferring my Smith 19 .357.
Wow, did I change. That is one powerful handgun, basically a .41mag snub with 10 rounds that isn't too much to shoot. Can't beat it.

I like my Glock 29 for summer cc, but much prefer my S&W 1006 or 1066 for all around use. My 1911s are safe queens.

The new Delta Elite is Series 80 and is supposed to on the shelves by the end of Q1.

If you department will allow the Kimber FPB, I would rather have it at my side.

And, I would take my Witness Elite Match over either one.

More and more, my G29 is becoming the go-to everything pistol for CCW, 2nd duty gun, and back-up blaster during tac training.

An easily portable 10mm powerhouse, the 10+1 capacity and lightweight are quite nice. It also handles Double Tap-level ammo with no issues.

In fact, it's been accurate with a range of bullet-weights, so I'm not restricted to one preferred load, although since the cold months set in it's been stuffed with DT's 200gn 10mm XTP-HP load.

By the way and just FYI, but the STHPs aren't doing anywhere near the "1290fps" that constitutes Winchester's "boxflap" koolaid; rather, chrono data posted over on GT's 10Ring strongly suggests that real-world velocity is closer to 1220fps from a 4.6" G20, with some lots producing data @ or near 1180fps  .

On my horizon for a full-size 10mm pistol is Vltor's Fortis - provided the gun's durability has been properly vetted before release of the final production model by actually firing several thousand rounds of full-power 10mm ammo through the prototypes, i.e., as in DT or Buffalo Bore-level ammo, not the watered-down .40-level loads.

Regardless, the all-steel, 5" Fortis is slated to have the same C&L carry mode as a 1911 and the original Bren Ten, while its mag capacity is said to be 15+1. The grip, however, is supposed to retain the same exterior grip dimensions as the BT, despite the enlarged mag capacity.

A couple of pic from the '09 SHOT Show are attached. (These were posted on the 10Ring):

I have put a few thousand rounds of hand loads using a 155gr bullet at 1350fps through my Colt Delta Elite without a problem.
