10mm ammo choice, which would you pick.

6 o'clock hold if like in this picture on left is a nope for me; I can live with either of the other two.

That said, the slide of my 20SF is currently being cut for a dot; when I get it back and put a Holosun 507 on it bullets will hit where the dot is. :)
I like between center hold and 6 o'clock per the target diagrams.

(The below issue is also a problem with iron sights, only they are typically not as adjustable)

When using an RDS, the main issue with bullet weight and velocity will be matching (or getting close) to POI with whatever range load you choose to use. If you roll your own, that's easy enough. With factory ammo 180gr is most common, probably at around 1100-1150fps (best guess on my part).

So a 150gr at 1500fps is going to leave the barrel much earlier, meaning the muzzle has less time to rise from the recoil, so POI may be much lower than with an average range load. You may still see a difference with 180s as you go from 1100fps to 1300fps, but it will be a much smaller difference.
Very true 185 hp out of my 45 hit way to low for my liking. 230 are right on.

Of the 2 the OP listed, Underwood 180’s.

That being said, I use the Underwood 165’s in my 3.8” barreled XDM Elite and 200’s out of my G20, S&W 2.0 and now my G40.

Unfortunately, south Florida has black bears that never hibernate, Florida Panthers and feral hogs. All of which can be encountered while in the woods.
However, keeping in line with the Op's scenario, either hollow point shot through a sweat shirt has the potential to become plugged with fabric, this being an FMJ. With these things in mind, I will take the 180's at max velocity.

There are black bears in the county where I live in FL; however, I am unlikely to encounter one in the parking lot of Publix, Wal-Mart or walking the dog where I live.

The standard was a Norma 200 grain jhp @1200fps

Actually it was a 170gr at ~ 1,370fps. When I recently bought my first 10mm in 30yrs, I dug around and found two partial boxes of both Norma 170’s and Hornady 170’s.

Back in in ‘91-94 I had a 1006. Shot it a LOT.
MY FAVORITE bullet is an old Semi Wadcutter mold for the 1960’s Herters .401 Power!ag.

Neither the Hornady nor Speer GoldDot will break up. In fact of the half dozen deer I’ve shot with.40’s and 10’s have NOT failed to completely penetrate a deer. Not even a Winchester 155gr SilverTip @ 1,200fps from a .40 Glock.

For that reason, I’ll leave my 9+1 10mm 1911 in its flap holster I wear when riding in a boat to hunting areas.
When otherwise, I’ll carry my G22 loaded with Hornady 155’s.

You MUST train for all scenarios especially the unlikely ones!!
Don't you know about those drug crazed wildlife gangs patrolling grocery store parking lots? Are you prepared for multiple bears attacking you while you have a pile of groceries to unload? Well?? How about if two bears and a coyote come after you from four different approaches?
:rofl::rofl:

Sorry. I couldn't help it.

I hear you; bears are like criminals, mobile, sounds like 180 gr. XTP.
Don't tell anyone but I've got 180 Gold Dots loaded to about 1,225 fps but I didn't present that as a choice cause it would negate the thread.

The point of the 10mm AUTO is to push (relatively) heavy bullets fast. That's starts at 200grns although the ubiquitous 180grn bullet provides a convenient weight split between senior and junior - i.e., the 10mm and the "10mm Kurtz/.40S&W - which both cartridges can use.

Until DT came along in the early 2000s, nobody made factory 200grn ammo in .40S&W. At that time, using hybrid propellants, DT loaded Hornady's XTP-HP to 1050fps in their .40 ammo.

IIRC, UW offers a similar 200grn .40 load @ 1000fps. Compare that to a 200grn 10mm load @ 1275fps or a 220grn HC 10mm load @ 1200-1250fps.

Neither. In 10mm I want 200 grain bullets. Also don’t love XTP for “walking around” carry, since they seem to not expand much and penetrate a lot, I’d prefer more expansion for 2 legged threats.

I like 200 grain XTP @1200 for my woods 10mm though.

In this thread we pick between a couple of 10mm ammo choices for SD against human attacker.

Option one is a 150 JHP like this:
https://underwoodammo.com/10mm-auto-150-grain-jacketed-hollow-point/

Option two is a 180 JHP like one of these:
https://underwoodammo.com/10mm-auto-180-grain-jacketed-hollow-point/
https://underwoodammo.com/10mm-auto-180-grain-xtp-jacketed-hollow-point/

No bears.
Caveat: You are going to carry the ammo in FL so "winter" clothing is a sweatshirt or light jacket, very unlikely that attackers will be wearing heavy clothing.

In this thread the bullets are equally accurate, have been tested for function and will impact at the same spot on target, equal shot placement is assumed and implied.
So, we will please not reply with whichever is more accurate.
Nor are we going to reply with it doesn't matter, pick one - please.
We also have boxes and boxes of all the ammo so availability is a non-factor.

Which would you pick for carry and why?

I really doubt it matters. I can't believe the guy on the mean end of the gun would know any difference.

On the deeper end of penetration, but not over penetrating, it stayed under 18'' in two different tests.
Heavy clothing with clear gel:
https://www.luckygunner.com/labs/10mm-auto-self-defense-ammo-ballistic-gel-tests/
180 XTP - 16.9'' / .64

Denim over sim test: 17 1/8'' / .65

Those two examples were both with a Glock 20 and one averaged 1,158 fps the other 1,155. The video said advertised velocity was 1,180 fps.
'Kay, thanks. That's the old ammo.

With this newer stuff Hornady decided to up its game with the 180grn XTP by pushing it into real 10mm territory.

Okay ...
1,180 advertised with 1,158 average in that first test is deemed "not real" 10mm ammo.
Which means the 175 Winchester Silvertip @ 1,143 fps also in 1st test must not be real 10mm either.

1,275 fps (650# KE) 180 gr. is "real" 10mm. Got it.
The Underwood 180 XTP is advertised at 1,300 fps so it is real 10mm
https://underwoodammo.com/10mm-auto...keted-hollow-point-hunting-self-defense-ammo/

But, the Underwood 180 Nosler is advertised @ 1,250 fps (625# KE) - Is that not real 10mm?
https://underwoodammo.com/10mm-auto-180gr.-sporting-jacketed-hollow-point-hunting-self-defense-ammo/
My handload with the Nosler 180 averaged 1,228 fps (603# KE) from a 5'' barrel, but that is not real 10mm. :what:
If I'm not shooting real 10mm what is it ... counterfeit, pretend...
