My dad just gave me a early birthday present. A Ruger 1911 chambered in 10mm. I haven't done any reloading for 10mm, but I've done other semi auto cartridges. I'm mainly looking for powders that you all like to use in your 10mm's with 180gr jacketed bullets.

I have #9, 2400, Unique, and True Blue. I assume I can find loads for those powders( maybe not Unique, but I am just now going thru my load books). I shot 180gr loads my dad made with #7 and #9. Both max or near max loads.

So what powder do you like to use? Not sure I can find any powder you list right now, but if it seems pretty popular here, I can at least keep my eyes open in the future.

You cannot throw 800X on anything other than an electronic scale. It doesn’t dump from a Autodisc worth a darn. Meters like cornflakes.

I use a Frankfort Intellidropper for my 800 X loads. It’s time consuming but we’ll worth it if you want maximum performance out of the 10MM. I still have 5 lbs left and will be sad when I run out.

I like BE-86 and Blue dot.. I've tried Longshot, Power Pistol, they just don't preform as well for me. Longshot shines in a .40 with a 165 gr. projectile though. Power pistol flattens primers quite a bit in the upper range. I have yet to try any AA#7 or #9, though I want to.

Just my $.02..

I have loads I like in 10mm with 180 grain bullets using 800x, Power Pistol and Longshot. Longshot has become my standard. It yields higher velocity without exceeding handbook max charges and is easy to load. Power pistol is easy to work with and would be my second choice. Early on I found some good loads for 800x.....but as others have mentioned it is hard to meter precisely. You will also find that book maximums with 800x vary widely.. I still love its versatility and high performance but I am less inclined to choose it these days.

I will say you can push 800X well above it’s listed max before pressure signs show up but refuse to list my max here out of respect to the forum rules.

I’m also working up a load using 800X with 147 gr XTP in .357 Sig and can’t climb the ladder beyond max listed as the case is already plum full at Hodgdons listed 9.0 gr max.

I have mentioned in other threads that I purchased some AA #5 for the sole purpose of using it in 10 MM loads. I liked it and it was accurate in several I tried. If you find any of this it would be worth trying IMO.

In order of preference:
Blue Dot, AA#9, Longshot, Universal (similar to Unique).
Never had the opportunity to evaluate 800X.

In my handguns;
Blue Dot - best accuracy
AA#9 - best compromise
Longshot - highest velocity
Universal - most all 'round powder for many calibers I shoot

Thanks everyone. It looks like the top three are 800X ( discontinued, but may still find some), Accurate #9( which I have) and Longshot ( which I will have to keep my eyes open for when things get better).

Thanks everyone

Been using AA-9 and 180gr bullets since the late 80's. I've tried other powders but never found anything that preformed any better. With XTP or Gold Dot bullets it is hard to beat.

I've hunted with my IAI Javelina and recently added the G40 as well. With the longer barrels the 180's really shine. I've had no issues with feral hogs or deer.

Have yet to find a more consistent load than 10.5 Blue Dot in my 1911. recoils like a regular 45. 5,000+ rounds and counting thru my ruger. Accuracy has been dead on. If the brass ejection is any indication of consistency - I set up a butterfly net in a stand a few feet away when shooting, and It hasn't missed a casing in the last 1000 rounds.
